Jacqueline Charlotte Dufresnoy, also known as "Coccinelle" (lit. "ladybug"), is a French actress, singer and social icon who played an important role in the history of transgender people (Transgender) in Europe, with the epithet derived from the dress she wore at the party with a dress that looked red with black polka dots.

History

She was born on August 23, 1931 in Paris, France. She died on October 9, 2006.

Beginning a career path as a cabaret performer, a transgender girl in the 50s got a job at the famous nightclub Le Carrousel de Paris.

In 1958, she underwent sex reassignment surgery in Casablanca, with Georges Burou following surgery. Doctor Burou said, "Bonjour, Mademoiselle" (meaning "Hello, ma'am").

And when she returned to France, she became famous as the first transgender woman to undergo sex reassignment surgery and was endorsed by the French government as a woman.

She later appeared in the media of the country, such as movies, publications.

In 1959, she appeared in the film Europa di notte, directed by Alessandro Blasetti, and in the same year, Italian singer Ghigo Agosti composed the song "Coccinella" to be dedicated to her, which caused a great wave of debate.

Married life

She was first married in 1960 to her first husband. This marriage is considered to be the first legal marriage of a transgender girl in France, which has provided a key pin for legal marriage in the Transgender group, and she has since been married 2 more times.

In 1987, she wrote an autobiography, Coccinelle par Coccinelle (published by Daniel Filipacchi).

Coccinelle has worked hard as an activist for transgender rights, founding the organization "Devenir Femme" (translated as "Being a Woman") to provide both psychological and practical support to those seeking gender reassignment surgery; she has also contributed to the founding of the Center to Help, Research and Provide Information on Transgender and Gender Identity.

Coccinelle was hospitalized in July 2006 after a stroke and died on October 9, the same year, in Marseille.

Coccinelle's life was quite colorful. While alive, she received criticism and admiration. In an age when racism was still quite violent, being a Transgender was against social values. She was subjected to racism and contempt from the local and international media, but her existence proved that even if you were a Transgender, you were capable, loving, entitled to have a voice, and legalized, as well as others, a model of gender legal certification in various European countries.
