USA lost original ideals

Reflecting on the widespread sentiment captured in the recent PBS News/NPR/Marist Poll, I’ve noticed that many Americans, including myself, feel a growing disconnection from the ideals that once defined the nation. These founding principles—liberty, equality, and justice—have historically inspired hope and progress. However, observing current political divisions and social challenges, it’s understandable why 83% of adults in the survey feel the country has strayed from these core beliefs. Personally, I’ve seen how discussions about freedom and democracy have become more polarized, making it difficult to find common ground. This growing divide can lead to a sense of loss concerning shared values. Many factors contribute to this shift, including economic disparities, changes in social attitudes, and the evolving global landscape. Importantly, acknowledging this perception opens the door for national conversations about how to realign with those founding principles. It challenges citizens and leaders alike to consider how the nation can renew its commitment to justice and equality in ways that resonate with today’s diverse population. In my experience, engaging with community initiatives and open dialogue forums has helped me understand different perspectives and reinforce the importance of civic participation. While the poll’s result may seem discouraging, it also acts as a catalyst for reflection and positive action toward reclaiming the spirit of the United States’ founding ideals.
