Located at Mercure ICON Singapore, Rolls Handroll Izakaya combines the interactive charm of an open-counter sushi bar with the relaxed atmosphere of a neighbourhood izakaya.
•
Stepping inside, the curved counter immediately draws attention, with rows of curated sake bottles displayed above the sushi counter.
•
Terracotta leather-padded armchairs offer comfortable seating, while simple Japanese-inspired tableware keeps the setting understated.
•
At its core, Rolls focuses on handcrafted handrolls prepared live behind the counter, alongside a selection of izakaya dishes, sake, and Japanese spirits.
•
We tried the following:
•
Appetisers
- Sesame Ponzu Tai Carpaccio
- Century Egg Tofu with Crab
Both offer an Oriental palate with a creative twist. The carpaccio is refreshing, while the century egg tofu brings earthy and umami notes without being overly pungent.
•
Yakimono
- Torikawa
- Nankotsu
- Okonomiyaki
Classic izakaya favourites served grilled and savoury. The chicken skin and cartilage add contrasting textures to the selection.
•
Signature Handroll Set
- Tai Yuzukosho
- Truffle Toro Engawa Aburi
- Mentaiko Aka Ebi
- Hotate Foie Gras
- Unagi Sansho
The chefs present the ingredients before rolling each handroll in front of us.

The pacing was well managed, and I particularly enjoyed the seaweed sheets. Crispy and easy to bite through, unlike some of the softer sheets I’ve had before.
•
Finished with a complimentary dessert from the chef.

Visiting Rolls Handroll Izakaya offers more than just a meal—it’s an experience that engages all your senses. One of the highlights was the open sushi counter, where skilled chefs craft each handroll live in front of you. The freshness of the ingredients was evident, particularly in the signature handrolls like the Tai Yuzukosho and Truffle Toro Engawa Aburi, where delicate flavors blended beautifully with the crispy seaweed sheets. The restaurant’s dedication to authentic izakaya flavors shines through their yakimono selections such as Torikawa (chicken skin) and Nankotsu (chicken cartilage), which provide a delightful contrast of textures. These dishes paired wonderfully with their curated sake bottles displayed above the counter, allowing for a culturally immersive Japanese dining experience. An unexpected treat was the Century Egg Tofu with Crab appetizer, which introduces an earthy umami depth without overpowering the palate. For those who appreciate subtle, creative twists on traditional Japanese cuisine, this dish is truly memorable. The seating comfort was notable, with terracotta leather-padded armchairs inviting diners to relax and enjoy their meal at a leisurely pace. This attention to detail in ambiance, combined with simple yet elegant Japanese-inspired tableware, contributes to the restaurant’s understated, warm vibe. For anyone looking to enjoy Japanese bites in Singapore, particularly on Club Street, Rolls Handroll Izakaya balances the interactive charm of a sushi bar with the relaxed, neighborhood feel of an izakaya—making it a perfect spot for both casual dinners and special occasions. Don’t forget to finish your meal with the complimentary dessert offered, a sweet note that caps the dining experience beautifully.
