Easy Homemade BEEF Pho! 🍲
Love pho so I made my own at home 😁
RECIPE ⬇️
Yields: 4-6 servings
Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 1-2 hours
INGREDIENTS:
For the broth: I used store-bought beef broth from the Asian grocery store, specifically Hmart!! I think it was a Vietnamese brand but I can’t remember the name.
For the pho:
* 1 pound beef flank steak, thinly sliced
* 8 ounces rice noodles
* 4 shiitake mushrooms, sliced
* 1 jalapeño pepper, thinly sliced
* Fresh cilantro, chopped
* Fresh lime wedges
* Hoisin sauce (for serving)
* Sriracha (for serving)
* Fresh basil (for serving)
* Bean Sprouts (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
* Prepare the beef: In a bowl, marinate thinly sliced beef flank steak in a small amount of the broth, fish sauce, and soy sauce for 15-20 minutes.
* Cook the noodles: Cook rice noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
* Assemble the pho: In a large bowl, add cooked rice noodles. Top with sliced beef, shiitake mushrooms, green onions, and jalapeño pepper. Pour HOT BROTH over the ingredients. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with lime wedges, hoisin sauce, and Sriracha. Add bean sprouts if you want an additional crunchy texture. Enjoy!! 😋
TIp: You can make your own beef broth for a more richer flavor! I’m sure there are recipes online you can find! Most broths at pho places take hours for that deep umami flavor so keep that in mind!

There's nothing quite as comforting as a steaming bowl of Vietnamese beef pho. While the traditional process of making pho broth can take hours, even days, I've found ways to bring that authentic taste right into my kitchen without the lengthy commitment. It's all about understanding the key components and how to maximize flavor efficiently! The Heart of Your Pho: The Broth For me, the broth is everything. While I often opt for quality store-bought beef broth to cut down on time (especially from Asian grocery stores like Hmart!), you can absolutely elevate your homemade beef pho broth with a few simple steps. If you're going the homemade route, think about the aromatics: charring ginger and onions, toasting star anise, cloves, cinnamon stick, and black cardamom pods before simmering them with beef bones for a deep, umami-rich pho soup base. This long simmering process is what gives traditional pho its signature flavor and beautiful clarity, making every spoonful of your beef pho broth a true delight. Even with store-bought broth, adding these toasted spices and simmering for an hour can make a huge difference. Choosing Your Beef: Flank, Brisket, or Both? My recipe highlights thinly sliced beef flank steak, which cooks perfectly in the hot broth and offers a tender bite. But don't limit yourself! Many love beef brisket pho for its rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture. If you're using brisket, you'll want to pre-cook it until tender before slicing it thinly. A mix of both flank steak and brisket can offer an amazing textural contrast in your vietnamese pho beef noodles. The key is always to slice the beef as thin as possible, ensuring it cooks quickly and evenly as you assemble your bowl. The Perfect Noodle and Essential Herbs For the noodles, follow package instructions for your rice noodles – al dente is key for that satisfying chew. Now, let's talk about the stars that bring the whole dish together: the fresh herbs and garnishes. These aren't just for decoration; they're crucial for the full sensory experience of pho beef noodles herbs! I always make sure to have a generous supply of fresh cilantro, Thai basil, and thinly sliced green onions. The basil adds a sweet, peppery note, while cilantro brings freshness. Don't forget the crisp bean sprouts, a squeeze of fresh lime, and thinly sliced jalapeño for a kick! These elements are what make your pho beef bowl truly pop and are essential for that picture-perfect vietnamese pho beef noodle soup close up. Assembling Your Bowl: The Ultimate Presentation Once your broth is simmering, your noodles are ready, and your beef is sliced, it's assembly time! (Just like in the pictures, where you can see the bowls being assembled!) Start with a bed of cooked rice noodles, then artfully arrange your thinly sliced beef (flank, brisket, or both!), shiitake mushrooms, green onions, and jalapeño over the top. The magic happens when you pour that piping hot broth directly over everything. The heat from the broth will gently cook the raw beef to perfection. Finish with a generous handful of fresh Thai basil, cilantro, and a pile of crunchy bean sprouts. Serve with hoisin sauce and Sriracha on the side for custom dipping and flavor adjustment. This method ensures that every element of your pho beef noodle soup is fresh, vibrant, and ready to eat, giving you that authentic Vietnamese pho beef bowl close up experience right at home!
