I Stuffed a Green Onion… Hear Me Out 👀🔥

Stuffed green onion… yeah, not your usual stuffed pepper 👀🔥

But once you see how it comes together, it just makes sense. Packed with flavor all the way through and cooked just right.

Sometimes it’s about trying something different and letting the food speak.

Less guessing. More cooking.

... Read moreOkay, so you saw my initial post about stuffing green onions and maybe thought, 'Huh?' Trust me, I get it! We're all used to stuffed peppers or tomatoes, but green onions? It might sound wild, but once you try it, you'll understand why this has become one of my absolute favorite, unexpectedly delicious dishes. It's seriously a game-changer for anyone looking to add a burst of fresh flavor and a unique twist to their weeknight meals or even a special gathering. I've been experimenting a lot lately, trying to get out of my culinary comfort zone, and this 'stuffed green onion' adventure was definitely a highlight. The beauty of it is how simple it is, yet the result is so sophisticated and packed with flavor that you'd think it took hours to prepare. So, if you're ready to try something new and exciting, here's my COMPLRTE guide to making these fantastic stuffed green onions. Here's what you'll need (Ingredients): 12-15 large green onions (scallions), preferably with a good amount of white and light green parts ½ lb ground pork or chicken (you can also use a plant-based alternative for a vegetarian option!) ¼ cup finely chopped shiitake mushrooms (or any mushroom you prefer) 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free) 1 teaspoon sesame oil ½ teaspoon white pepper 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder For the sauce (optional but highly recommended): 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon water A pinch of red pepper flakes (for a little kick!) Let's get cooking! (Instructions): Prepare the Green Onions: Wash the green onions thoroughly. Carefully trim off the very root ends and any wilted green tips. Blanch the green onions in boiling water for about 30 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath. This makes them pliable and easier to handle without breaking. Once cooled, pat them completely dry. Make the Stuffing: In a medium bowl, combine the ground meat (or alternative), chopped mushrooms, minced garlic, grated ginger, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, white pepper, and cornstarch. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined. Stuffing Time: Take one green onion. Gently make a small slit lengthwise along the white part, being careful not to cut all the way through. Carefully open it up slightly to create a pocket. Spoon a small amount of the stuffing into this pocket, pressing it firmly but gently. You want to fill it without overstuffing, so it doesn't burst during cooking. Repeat with all the green onions. Cook Them Up: You have a few options here! Steaming: Arrange the stuffed green onions in a single layer in a steamer basket. Steam for 10-12 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through. This is my favorite method as it keeps them tender. Pan-frying: Lightly oil a skillet. Pan-fry the stuffed green onions over medium heat, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. This gives them a nice char. Whip Up the Sauce: While the green onions are cooking, whisk together all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Serve and Enjoy: Once cooked, arrange the stuffed green onions on a platter. Drizzle generously with the prepared sauce. You can also garnish with extra sesame seeds or a sprinkle of fresh chili if you like. Trust me, this recipe is incredibly versatile. You can play around with the stuffing – add finely diced shrimp, water chestnuts for crunch, or even different herbs. It’s perfect as an appetizer or a light main course served with some steamed rice. Give this a try, and you might just find your new favorite way to eat green onions!
