SLACKER SIDE

... Read moreOh, BREASTFEEDING MAMAS, if you're reading this, you probably know the frustration of having a 'slacker side' – that one breast that just doesn't seem to produce as much milk as the other! I was there, feeling like I had tried everything, and it can be so disheartening when you really NEED TIPS ON HOW TO INCREASE MY SLACKER! But don't give up hope; there are many strategies you can try to encourage that side to catch up and boost your overall milk supply. First, let's talk about some tried-and-true methods for encouraging your 'slacker' breast. One of the most effective ways is to nurse or pump more frequently on that side. Think of it as supply and demand – the more stimulation and emptying that breast receives, the more signals your body gets to produce milk there. Try starting your nursing sessions on the slacker side, or do an extra pumping session focused solely on it. Power pumping, which mimics cluster feeding by pumping in short bursts over an hour, can also be incredibly helpful. You might do 10 minutes pumping, 10 minutes rest, 10 minutes pumping, and so on for an hour, once a day. Another tip that made a difference for me was hands-on pumping or nursing. While you're pumping or nursing, gently massage your breast from the outside towards the nipple. This can help to express more milk and stimulate more production. Hydration and nutrition are also foundational. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water throughout the day – breastfeeding can make you incredibly thirsty! Eating a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is crucial. Many moms find oats, flaxseed, and certain herbs like fenugreek or blessed thistle helpful, though it’s always best to consult with a lactation consultant before taking supplements. Now, about specific dietary questions, like the one many of you might have about green onions and milk supply. It's interesting how various foods get associated with boosting milk production! While green onions are a healthy and nutritious vegetable, packed with vitamins and minerals, there isn't any scientific evidence or widespread traditional knowledge directly linking them to an increase in breast milk supply. They're a great addition to a healthy diet, and eating well supports your overall health, which in turn supports your milk production. However, don't expect green onions alone to be the magic bullet for your slacker side. Focus on a varied, nutrient-dense diet rather than relying on any single food for a supply boost. Ultimately, every mom's breastfeeding journey is unique. What works for one might not work for another. If you're consistently struggling with low supply or a pronounced 'slacker side,' reaching out to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) can provide personalized guidance and support. They can help identify underlying issues and create a tailored plan to help you meet your breastfeeding goals. Remember, you're doing an amazing job, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness!

Maybe try nursing on that side more often! My left is my slacker so I had to switch up how often I nurse my baby on my left side.
