Inspiration comes in many forms

I get asked this question a lot, hell most authors get asked this question all the time in some form or another. You'd think it was an easy answer to give, but it usually is one of the more difficult and nuanced questions to answer, at least for me. 📚 A lot of elements went into inspiring my sci-fi fantasy romance. The world is heavily inspired by shows like "Arcane" and "Altered Carbon", but the characters were heavily inspired by Baldur's Gate III, namely Astarion for the MMC. You see, my Eerden world was already crafted, it's magic and lore done for my "Ellinor" series, but this world is so rich that I didn't want to leave it entirely to tell new stories. Which is why I love me a shared universe. It lets me keep a world I love, inspired by elements that inspire me (elemental magic combined with high tech with cyberpunk lifestyle vibes) and craft all new characters inspired by other pieces of media that give me life. Baldur's Gate has been a love of mine for decades, long before this latest game, but the character of Astarion just meant so much to me, like he did for so many others, that I couldn't not write something. And because my world already allows for very varied looking people with abilities, well, making Casimir look a bit like Casimir was easy, but no, he's not a vampire. But yes, he is not in control of his own life, not yet, not until Olline... But I digress. The point is, games and shows more than other books are the basis for EotH, that and banter similar to what you get in "Act your age, Eve Brown." Which is why it's hard for me to tell you what inspired this book, because so much did! And so much also made it so this book almost didn't happen. But that's a tale for another time. 🪴 But tell me something that inspires you, friends! #bookinspiration #writinginspiration #sciencefantasy #scififantasy #baldursgate3

... Read moreInspiration plays a vital role in the creative process, especially for genres like science fiction and fantasy. Many authors draw from a wealth of sources, including games, films, and other literature, to create multi-dimensional worlds and compelling characters. For example, shows like 'Altered Carbon' and video games such as 'Baldur's Gate III' not only provide thematic elements but also inform character archetypes. The interplay between technology and magic in these narratives often reflects the current cultural discourse on technology's impact on humanity. When crafting a unique universe, authors might also look at character development in other media, hoping to capture an emotional resonance that resonates with their audience. This approach fosters a vibrant shared universe, allowing for expansive story-telling opportunities while honoring the influences that inspire writers. Engaging with fellow writers and readers can lead to rich discussions on inspiration, helping to uncover new ideas and creative paths. Therefore, participating in forums or discussions about 'book inspiration' or 'writing inspiration' can enhance creativity and collaboration, ultimately benefiting the broader literary community.
