Quilting / Sewing as a Hobby

Well, I decided to pick up an old Hobby.. sewing.

It's been maybe 15 years since I machine sewed anything, and probably 20 years since I finished my last quilt.

But it's amazing what you can remember from that long ago once you start again.

I purchased some little tidbits I thought I needed (thimble, rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, pins, etc).

I also bought fat quarters and thread. The sewing machine and other items I already had in my sewing kit that my grandmother got/made up for me when I was in middle school.

I bought 2 different groups of coordinating fat quarters (18"x22"). Cows, Chickens, and green for my son and pink, pigs, and cowgirl boots for my daughter. The goal is to make little throw blankets for my kids, as practice until I'm more comfortable trying something larger and more complicated.

It took me a while to figure out the math and make sure I chose the right size and to cut the pieces correctly. I cut each of the fabrics into 4"×4" squares. I then chose a pattern where the matching pieces move at a diagonal. I was able to get 4 rows, with 10 squares each, pieced together before I started going cross-eyed.

I took about 3 hours to go from 6 fat quarters to 4 rows finished. I picked it back up the next day and was able to finish the quilt top in less than 3 hours. My son's quilt top is finished, 10 across and 12 long 4" squares, with 1/4" seam allowance. I plan to do a solid color for the back, self binding.

I think these will be perfect for the kids to use while in their carseats this winter!

I will update with final product photos. I haven't decided on a pattern to my daughters quilt. I will post more about that too.
