When OverstimulationMakes you YELL!

I’m going to be real with you — I love my family more than anything, but sometimes the noise, the mess, and the constant “mom, mom, mom” gets so loud in my head that I snap.

I’ve yelled. I’ve regretted it. And I’ve promised myself I’ll do better.

So I made myself a super short Overstimulation Plan that actually works in real life:

🫁 Notice my warning signs – tight chest, sharp tone, wanting everyone silent right now.

💧 Quick reset – run hands under cool water, step into another room, take 3 deep breaths.

🚪 Communicate – “I need 1 minute to calm my brain” or use a calm cue with my family.

✨ Lower overwhelm – turn off TV, dim the lights, give kids a quiet activity.

❤️ Repair – If I yell, I own it: “I’m sorry. I was overwhelmed. I should have taken a break.”

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about catching yourself sooner and showing your kids it’s okay to pause.

If you’re a mama who feels overstimulated easily, you’re not alone. I see you. 🫶🏼

... Read moreOverstimulation is a common challenge faced by many parents, especially mothers who juggle multiple responsibilities and manage constant demands from their children. Understanding the signs of overstimulation, such as physical tension like a tight chest or emotional signals like a sharp tone, is essential for preventing emotional outbursts like yelling. Experts recommend implementing quick coping mechanisms like deep breathing exercises or stepping away briefly to reset your nervous system. Cooling your hands with water or engaging in mindful activities can also have calming effects. Communication plays a critical role in managing overstimulation. Expressing to your family that you need a moment to calm down can create understanding and reduce tension. Setting up calm cues with children helps them recognize when you need a pause, fostering empathy and patience. Additionally, modifying the environment by lowering stimuli—such as turning off the TV, dimming lights, or providing quiet activities—is effective in reducing sensory overload. When slips happen and yelling occurs, it is crucial to repair the relationship by acknowledging the mistake and apologizing honestly. This models emotional regulation for children and teaches them that everyone needs to take breaks and manage their feelings. Perfection is not the goal, but being proactive about self-awareness and self-care nurtures a healthier family dynamic. Overstimulation is often linked to anxiety and mental fatigue. Parents experiencing these feelings are not alone and can benefit from community support such as mom therapy groups or therapist guidance focusing on anxious parenting. Incorporating relaxation techniques, self-compassion, and practical overstimulation plans can promote wellness and resilience. Ultimately, managing overstimulation requires a combination of awareness, quick resets, effective communication, environmental adjustments, and relationship repair. These strategies empower parents to create calm, supportive homes and teach valuable emotional coping skills to their children.
