Part 3: Closet clean out! Part 1 dresses

Okay, so you've seen my journey through Part 1 and Part 2 of my closet clean out, and if you thought those were tough, buckle up for the main event: dresses! This section, truly, was a hard one for me. There's something about dresses – they hold so many memories, hopes, and sometimes, the ghost of a past size. But I was determined to make my closet a place of joy, not stress. My first step in this epic Part 3 closet clean out was the most daunting: I pulled every single dress out of my closet. Yes, *every single one*. It was a mountain of fabric, ranging from casual sundresses to fancy evening gowns, and even a few I hadn't seen in years. This visual overload is key; it forces you to confront the sheer volume of what you own. Next came the try-on test, which I highly recommend. It’s easy to say a dress still fits, but putting it on tells the real story. I stood in front of the mirror, dress by dress, asking myself a few crucial questions: Does it fit me well right now? Be honest. If it’s too tight, too loose, or just uncomfortable, it’s probably not serving you. Does it make me feel good? This is huge. If it doesn't spark joy or confidence, why keep it? Have I worn it in the last year? The 'one-year rule' is a lifesaver. Exceptions for special occasion dresses, of course, but for everyday wear, if it hasn't seen the light of day, it's a strong candidate for donation. Is it truly my style anymore? Our tastes evolve. That trendy piece from five years ago might not reflect the 'you' of today. I then created three piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Toss. For the 'Keep' pile, I focused on versatile pieces, timeless classics, and items that truly made me feel fantastic. The 'Donate/Sell' pile grew quickly – dresses that were still in great condition but just weren't 'me' anymore. The 'Toss' pile was for anything stained, ripped, or beyond repair. One of the hardest parts was dealing with sentimental dresses. I had a few from graduations or significant events. For these, I allowed myself to keep one or two that truly held special meaning and fit well, but for others, a quick photo and a grateful goodbye was the way to go. It’s okay to let go of the physical item while holding onto the memory. Finally, re-organizing the kept dresses was so satisfying. I invested in slim velvet hangers to save space and prevent slipping. I grouped my dresses by type – casual, work, evening – and then by color. This makes getting ready so much faster and more enjoyable. My closet now feels lighter, more organized, and truly reflective of my current style and life. This dress purge was tough, but the result is a closet glow-up that makes every day feel a little more put-together!
