From Healthcare to Real Estate: My Career Pivot
I left my healthcare job to start over in real estate… and it was the scariest, most freeing thing I’ve ever done.
I spent 6 years studying healthcare and I earned my Master’s in Healthcare Administration thinking I’d work my way up in a hospital system. And I did, technically. I landed a job as an administrative assistant to a surgeon at breast oncology clinic.
I had a salary, benefits, a steady 9–5. But truthfully? I felt miserable. I used to stare at my calendar and wonder, Is this it?
During winter break of grad school, I took a month-long trip to Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, I met a woman who used to work at Google. She told me she made her money investing early in Amazon and Google. She acknowledged her privilege but said something I’ll never forget:
“You don’t build the life you want by playing it safe.”
That stuck with me. I came back home, finished my degree, and signed up for my real estate licensing course.
I didn’t know anyone in the industry. I had no background in sales. But I had this fire inside me—I wanted freedom, creativity, and the chance to actually build something of my own.
Since then, I’ve been working in NYC and Long Island, building my business from scratch. I’ve learned how to film and edit videos for social, negotiate deals, guide first-time renters, and tour multi-million dollar listings. I’ve failed, cried, celebrated, and grown in ways I never could’ve imagined.
It wasn’t easy. But here’s what I had to unlearn:
➤ That “sunk cost” means you have to stay – Just because I spent years in school doesn’t mean I owed that version of me forever.
➤ That success = stability – I had a stable job but felt stuck. Now I have unstable income, but my passion is back.
➤ That other people’s opinions matter more than my joy – Spoiler: they don’t.
I don’t regret my healthcare background—it gave me structure, empathy, and resilience. But real estate gave me freedom.
✨ Would you switch careers if fear wasn’t holding you back?
