I’ve just started a new shrimp tank where i experimented with a more clean and iwagumi-inspired scape.
the rocky hardscape in the middle being the main focus, with a clean carpet (save for the front😅).
i never tried the dry start method before, so this took some patience but it works wonders with the seeds i got off shopee.
thinking of adding some snails but don’t think they have that much mobility on the carpet. what do you guys think?
Starting my iwagumi shrimp tank involved several learning experiences I’d love to share. The key to the success was choosing the right stones to create a natural focal point that mimics the minimalist Japanese style. I used a rocky hardscape in the center, which quickly became the centerpiece of the tank. I tried the dry start method for the first time to establish a healthy carpet of plants before adding water. It definitely required patience, but using seeds ordered from Shopee proved to be effective in encouraging lush, vibrant growth. During this phase, maintaining high humidity and minimal disturbance helped the plants root well. Adding shrimp introduced movement and life without disturbing the delicate layout. I’m considering adding snails to help with algae control, but I’m cautious about how their movement might impact the carpet. Some aquascapers recommend small, mobile snail species that won’t uproot plants. Looking ahead, upgrading to a larger tank has allowed the plants, colors, and hardscape to harmonize beautifully, creating a calming, cozy aquatic scene. Rotating the tank for a 3-sided view enhances the visual depth and showcases the intricate work behind the aquascape. If you’re starting an iwagumi shrimp tank, patience and attention to detail with plant selection and tank setup really pay off in the elegance and health of the ecosystem.
The seeds sold in shopee are usually non aquatic plants. So just take note to remove all of them once u see some start to melt. Can also try swtiching to a hang on back filter instead or a sponge filter which takes up a lot of space
