LDS Xavier Cake!

... Read moreWow, I'm still buzzing from making my very first anime/video game cake! It was such a fun and rewarding challenge, especially since I'm a huge fan of Love and Deep Space, and Xavier is definitely my space boyfriend! If you're thinking about tackling a themed cake like this, especially with an edible image, let me share a few things I learned along the way. First off, choosing the right image is key. I spent ages picking the perfect Xavier art that would look great as an edible print. Make sure it's high resolution so it doesn't pixelate when printed. I found a great local bakery that does custom edible image printing – definitely worth finding a reliable source. They usually print on a sugar sheet that's surprisingly easy to handle. For the cake itself, I went with a simple round cake, which is always a good base for a centerpiece image. I used a classic cream frosting because it provides a smooth, light-colored canvas for the edible image. You want to make sure your frosting is perfectly smooth and level before applying the edible image, as any bumps will show through. Chilling the frosted cake for a bit helps set the frosting, making it easier to work with. Now, for the edible image application – this was the part I was most nervous about! The trick is to peel the edible image carefully from its backing sheet. I found it best to do this slowly, from one corner. Once it's off, you need to be decisive. I gently centered the Xavier image on top of my cake. A little tip I picked up: a tiny bit of water or light corn syrup brushed onto the frosting just before placing the image can help it adhere smoothly. I pressed it down very, very gently from the center outwards to push out any air bubbles. My image did come out a little discolored, as I mentioned in my post. I think it might have been due to the humidity in my kitchen that day, or maybe I didn't get it on fast enough. For next time, I'm definitely going to try to work in a cooler, drier environment. If yours also looks a bit off, don't despair! You can always distract from it with some creative decorating around the edges. I decided to complement the 'Love and Deep Space' vibe by decorating around Xavier with some delicate blue roses and green leaves, just like you might see in a charming vintage cake design. It really framed the edible image nicely and added that extra touch of elegance. Using a simple star tip for the roses and a leaf tip for the greenery can make a huge difference. Overall, it was such a rewarding experience to bring my favorite character to life on a cake! It might not have been perfect, but it was made with so much love, and it tasted amazing. If you're a fan looking to make your own "space boyfriend" or "space girlfriend" cake, I highly encourage you to try it! Don't be afraid to experiment, and remember, practice makes perfect. I'm already brainstorming ideas for my next video game cake adventure!
