As a parent, I’ve found that blending family traditions with history lessons creates meaningful moments that my children truly appreciate. One example is the story of Norbert Rillieux, a pioneering Black inventor whose work transformed the process of sugar refining. Before his innovation, refining sugar was a dangerous job that exposed workers to harmful conditions. Rillieux’s design made the process safer and more efficient, benefiting families everywhere by improving the quality and safety of sugar we enjoy in everyday treats. I love using occasions like Valentine’s Day to share these stories with my kids because it connects something they love—sweet treats—to a proud legacy of Black excellence and innovation. It makes history feel alive and personal rather than distant or abstract. Incorporating these lessons during Black History Month and throughout the year has also strengthened my children’s understanding of their cultural heritage and the ways it shapes the world around them. Encouraging curiosity by discussing innovators like Rillieux helps children see themselves as part of a continuing story of creativity and resilience. It also prompts conversations about why representation matters and how every person can contribute to making a difference. Ultimately, teaching history through family moments not only honors the past but also inspires hope and pride for the future.
