Romans 12:9-21 is a rundown of various brief, bulleted orders. Taken together, they illustrate what the living sacrificial life of a Christian should be like.
... Read moreBible journaling has become such a lifeline for me, especially when diving into powerful passages like Romans 12. There's something incredibly transformative about writing down your thoughts and prayers as you engage with scripture. Recently, I've been spending a lot of time with Romans 12:12, and I wanted to share how I've been journaling through it and what it's taught me.
Romans 12:12 says, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” This single verse holds so much wisdom for navigating life's ups and downs. When I first read “rejoice in hope,” I thought, “How can I always rejoice when things are tough?” But through journaling, I realized it's not about ignoring challenges, but anchoring my joy in God's eternal promises. I started writing down specific promises from the Bible and listing small blessings I could rejoice in, even on difficult days. This practice helps shift my perspective from what’s lacking to what’s eternally true.
The second part, “be patient in tribulation,” really hit home. Life throws so many curveballs, and my natural instinct isn't always patience! For this, I've used my journal as a safe space to vent my frustrations, but then intentionally pivot to praying for strength and endurance. I'll jot down specific 'tribulations' I'm facing and then re-read verses about God's faithfulness in suffering. It's a space to process my emotions honestly before God and remind myself that His timing is perfect, even when I don't understand it.
And finally, “be constant in prayer” felt daunting at first. My journaling has naturally become an extension of my prayer life. Instead of just thinking about my prayers, I write them out – petitions, thanksgivings, confessions. Sometimes, I just write “Lord, help me be constant” over and over until my heart truly grasps it. It's not about being perfect or praying for hours on end, but about consistently carving out that time with Him.
Understanding 12:12 has also opened my eyes to the broader message of Romans 12:9-21, which talks about living a life of active love and humble service. Journaling through these verses, I see how hope, patience, and prayer are foundational to truly living out a “living sacrifice” for God. Each “bulleted order” in this section, from loving genuinely to practicing hospitality, becomes a prompt for self-reflection and a call to action in my daily life. It’s amazing how deeply you can understand a passage when you engage with it personally.
So, how do I actually journal through this? It's simpler than you might think!
Choose your style: I love a simple notebook and a colorful pen, but some friends use digital apps or even art journals with stickers and drawings. Find what feels right for *you*. There's no right or wrong way.
Read & Reflect: I read a small section, sometimes just one verse like 12:12, multiple times. I like to read it in a few different translations if I have them.
Ask Questions: After reading, I ask myself questions like: What does this mean? How does it apply to my life right now? What is God asking me to do or change? What emotions does this verse stir in me?
Write It Down: I jot down my initial thoughts, feelings, and any insights that come to mind. Don't worry about perfect grammar or spelling; this is your personal conversation with God. I often include my prayers directly in my journal.
Pray & Plan: I turn my reflections into specific prayers and then think about one tangible way I can apply what I learned that day. Maybe it's being more patient with a family member, or actively looking for something to rejoice about in a challenging situation.
If you've been wanting to try Bible journaling, especially with Romans 12, I wholeheartedly encourage you to start. It doesn't have to be perfect or pretty. It's your unique, personal conversation with God through His Word. It's been such a blessing for me, and I truly believe it can be for you too!
