Poll taxes existed in the United States, particularly from the 1880s to the 1960s, largely used in Southern states to disenfranchise African American and poor white voters. They required payment of a fee to vote, violating voting rights until prohibited in federal elections by the 24th Amendment in 1964 and state elections by the Supreme Court in 1966. Republicans are trying to bring it back by sneaking it through in a bill that creates a poll tax.
