... Read moreI love creating beautiful internal pages for my junk journals, as you can see in this post! But let's be honest, the cover is what truly sets the tone and makes someone want to dive inside. I've had so many people ask me about my cover process, especially when aiming for that charming 'shabby chic' look. So, I wanted to share some of my go-to ideas for creating a gorgeous junk journal cover that perfectly complements those vintage-inspired internal spreads!
First off, think about your main theme. For a shabby chic junk journal, I always lean towards soft pastels, muted florals, and a touch of rustic elegance. Imagine a distressed lace overlay, maybe some faded satin ribbons, or even a piece of an old embroidered doily. These textures immediately give that comforting, aged feel. I often start by finding a sturdy base – sometimes it's an old book cover I've upcycled, or thick cardboard that I've covered with aged paper, similar to the beautiful, worn look of the pages inside.
One of my favorite techniques is layering. Don't be afraid to stack different elements! I might start with a base of tea-dyed fabric or a piece of vintage wallpaper. Then, I’ll add a layer of delicate lace, perhaps a small piece of a floral-patterned napkin, or even a section of a fabric rose. You can distress the edges of these layers with a bit of sandpaper or by gently tearing them to enhance that 'loved' look. Remember those beautiful floral cut-outs I used on the internal pages? You can absolutely incorporate similar elements on your cover! A circular floral cut-out adhered with some strong glue can be a stunning focal point.
Embellishments are key for shabby chic. Think about small metal charms, rusty safety pins, tiny antique buttons, or even a delicate skeleton key tied with twine. I also adore using dried flowers or small artificial ones that have a vintage feel. Sometimes, I'll even use a bit of gesso or white paint to selectively 'fade' certain areas, making it look like it's been cherished for decades. For the title or label, I often use a piece of aged cardstock with a handwritten or stamped phrase, or maybe a rectangular floral insert that I’ve backed with some sturdy paper, just like the one inside. It ties everything together beautifully.
Don't forget the spine! This is an often-overlooked area. I love to reinforce my spines with fabric – sometimes a strip of linen, or a heavily textured fabric that adds to the tactile experience. You can also sew on charms or beads directly to the spine for extra character. And for the closure, something simple yet elegant works best for shabby chic – a delicate tie with ribbon, a lace wrap, or a simple elastic band decorated with a charm.
My personal tip? Don't strive for perfection. The beauty of shabby chic and junk journaling is in its imperfections, its worn edges, and its unique story. Each tear, each stain, each slightly uneven placement adds to its charm. Just let your creativity flow, and enjoy the process of bringing your journal to life, from the very first glance at its cover to the final internal page!
