Readers are already starting to receive their copies (!!), but behind the scenes I’m still in full-on marketing goblin mode with my last-minute checklist. Because let’s be real: publishing a book doesn’t stop at writing “The End.”
Here’s what launch week looks like for me:
☕ Sending reminders to ARC readers to post their reviews (because every single one counts!).
☕ Prepping my newsletter with all the spooky-chaotic behind-the-scenes updates for subscribers.
☕ Scheduling social posts and reels (aka fighting with Canva and second-guessing captions).
☕ Drafting my launch day thank-yous now, because future me will definitely be ugly crying into coffee.
✨ Writers: what’s always on your last-minute checklist before a launch or big project?
✨ Readers: when a book shows up early in your mailbox, what’s the very first thing you do?
👀 Only 6 days until launch. Marketing goblin mode: activated.
... Read moreOkay, fellow writers and book lovers, my last-minute book launch marketing checklist is usually pretty intense, but honestly, that's just the tip of the iceberg! While I'm deep in my "marketing goblin mode" getting ready for the big day, I wanted to share some of the other lessons I've learned along this incredible journey. It's not just about the final countdown; it's about building that momentum and keeping it going long after.
One area that always feels like a puzzle is social media. Beyond just scheduling posts and wrestling with Canva to get those visuals just right, figuring out what truly resonates can be tough. I’ve found that consistency and authenticity are key. For my latest book launch, I'm really focusing on short, engaging video content – think Instagram Reels or even dipping my toes deeper into BookTok. It's not just about showing the cover; it's about sharing snippets of the writing process, behind-the-scenes glimpses of my world, or even just fun, relatable author struggles. Using relevant hashtags is crucial here to reach new readers, but it's more about quality than quantity. I try to mix broad tags like #WritersJourney or #BookLaunchCountdown with more niche ones specific to my genre or themes, like #CozyChaosVibes. It really helps Google understand what my content is about and gets it in front of the right eyes! My own little "marketing checklist" for social media often includes brainstorming different types of content – from Q&As to short readings.
Another huge piece of the puzzle is those amazing ARC readers. Getting those early reviews is gold! I've learned that you can't just send the book and hope for the best. A gentle follow-up email or a quick message on their preferred platform can make all the difference. I always try to make it easy for them by including direct links to where they can post their reviews on various platforms. Building a strong relationship with your ARC team before the book launch is so important; they become your first champions, actively helping to generate buzz. It’s like having a built-in cheer squad ready to spread the word and get those crucial initial reviews flowing. Consider offering them a sneak peek into your newsletter content as a token of appreciation!
And what about after launch day? That's something the countdown checklist doesn't always cover in detail. The work doesn't stop once the book is officially out there. I'm already thinking about post-launch strategies: continuing to engage with readers through my newsletter with exclusive updates, participating in online book clubs, and looking for opportunities to share more about my story. Preparing those launch day thank-you notes in advance is a small but mighty step to show appreciation, but the ongoing gratitude and connection with readers is what truly sustains an author's career. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and every step, from the first draft to the endless marketing checklist, is part of our unique #WritersJourney. Keep creating, keep sharing, and keep connecting!
