Packing Thoughts 📚
I’m getting ready for tomorrow’s trip and, unsurprisingly, the hardest part is deciding which book to bring.
Do I finally pick something from my TBR like Tag You’re Dead or The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association?
Or go with a trusted recommendation from friends like Two Sides to Every Murder or Spellcaster?
Or do I ignore all logic and take the brand-new arrival, We Who Will Die?
Why is choosing a travel book always this stressful? Help a reader out.

Choosing books for a holiday, especially when the whole family is involved, can feel like a whole new challenge compared to just picking one for yourself! I used to dread this part of planning, wondering how to keep everyone entertained without packing a library. But over the years, I've gathered some strategies that make it so much easier and even fun. First off, think about the kind of holiday you're having. A beach vacation might call for light, escapist reads – think breezy romances, thrilling mysteries, or inspiring non-fiction. For a cozy cabin retreat, I love bringing a chunky fantasy novel or a historical fiction epic. If it's a city break, something that ties into the destination's history or culture can be really immersive. And for long plane or car journeys? Audiobooks are a game-changer! My family and I often listen to a captivating story together, which sparks great conversations and makes the travel time fly by. When it comes to pleasing everyone, a diverse selection is key. For younger kids, picture books and early readers are a must. For teens, I try to pack a mix of popular YA fiction, graphic novels, and maybe a classic they haven't discovered yet. And for the adults, it’s a good idea to have a couple of options – one from your TBR pile you've been meaning to get to, and perhaps a lighter read for those tired evenings. I've found that having a 'family reading basket' where everyone contributes a book they're excited about can build anticipation for the trip. Another tip I swear by is considering the format. Physical books are lovely, but they can be heavy and take up precious luggage space. E-readers are fantastic for travel, allowing you to carry dozens of books without the bulk. For my family, I often load up my e-reader with a few choices for myself and some classics or popular series for my partner. For the kids, I tend to stick with physical books, especially if they're younger, as it's less screen time and more tactile. Don't forget about 'reading emergencies' either! I always try to have one 'backup' book, maybe a digital one, in case someone finishes their planned reads too quickly or isn't enjoying what they brought. And a trip to a local library or bookstore at your destination can be a fun activity and a great way to discover new authors or local stories. Finally, make it a conversation. Before we leave, I sit down with my family and we chat about what kind of stories we're in the mood for. Are we looking for adventure? Laughter? Something thought-provoking? This not only helps narrow down the choices but also gets everyone excited about the reading part of our holiday. It turns what could be a stressful packing decision into another enjoyable part of our family adventure!
