🌤️ First Day in Oklahoma, Done Right

Our first full day in Oklahoma came with perfect weather, so we headed straight to The Gathering Place—and honestly, I get why it’s a top thing to do in Tulsa.

This place is HUGE and packed with things to do for all ages:

• multiple playgrounds (seriously, not just one)

• wide walking paths with beautiful views

• gardens and open green spaces to relax

• spots to climb, explore, and let kids burn off energy

• areas that are just as enjoyable for adults as they are for kids

Izzi’s review was… mixed.

She complained about the walking, asked how much farther at least ten times, and then refused to leave when it was time to go. So I’d say that’s a solid endorsement.

If you’re visiting Tulsa (or live nearby) this is absolutely a must-stop. Whether you want an active day, a relaxed stroll, or somewhere that keeps kids entertained without feeling chaotic, this place checks all the boxes.

We’ll definitely be back before we leave.

Gathering Place
2025/12/27 Edited to

... Read moreWhen we planned our trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma, finding family-friendly activities was high on our list. Everyone kept recommending 'The Gathering Place,' and after experiencing it ourselves, I can wholeheartedly say it's more than just a park – it's an absolute gem for families! If you're scouring for things to do with your family in Tulsa, this incredible space should be at the very top. What makes The Gathering Place so special, especially for families? Well, for starters, its sheer size and variety are mind-boggling. We spent hours there, and honestly, felt like we only scratched the surface. My biggest tip for visiting is to go early, especially if you have little ones, to beat the heat and the biggest crowds. Packing a picnic or at least plenty of snacks and water is a game-changer, as there are so many beautiful spots to relax and refuel. The park has fantastic food options too, but sometimes having your own stash saves time and money. One thing I adored about The Gathering Place is how thoughtfully designed it is for different age groups. My daughter (who shall remain nameless, but let's just say she's got *opinions*) went from complaining about walking to being utterly enthralled by the various play zones. The unique climbing structures, the massive slides, and even the natural areas for imaginative play kept her engaged for hours. For us adults, the wide, paved walking paths offered stunning views of the Arkansas River, and the beautifully landscaped gardens provided peaceful moments amidst the joyful chaos. It’s truly a place where parents can enjoy themselves just as much as the kids burn off energy. Don't forget sunscreen and comfortable shoes – you'll be doing a lot of exploring! While The Gathering Place could easily fill an entire day (or two!), Tulsa offers a wealth of other fantastic family activities worth exploring. If your kids are into science and discovery, the Tulsa Children's Museum Discovery Lab is an absolute must-see, offering hands-on exhibits that are both educational and incredibly fun. For animal lovers, the Tulsa Zoo provides an engaging experience with a diverse range of wildlife. Or, for a dose of culture mixed with history, the Gilcrease Museum, with its impressive collection of American art and artifacts, can be surprisingly captivating for older children. Tulsa truly shines when it comes to keeping families entertained. From lively festivals in the Brady Arts District to exploring the historic Blue Dome and Deco Districts, there’s always something happening. Even simple things like a stroll through the Philbrook Museum of Art gardens can be a delightful family outing on a nice day. We found that combining a visit to The Gathering Place with another activity, like grabbing a bite in the Blue Dome District, made for a perfectly rounded day of family fun in Tulsa. To make the most of your family trip to Tulsa, I’d suggest planning your days with a mix of active and relaxed pursuits. We found using a 'home base' hotel near downtown or the river district was super convenient for accessing many attractions. Public transport is available, but having a car definitely gives you more flexibility, especially with kids. Also, keep an eye out for local events calendars – Tulsa often has free concerts, farmers' markets, or seasonal events that are perfect for families and add an extra layer of local flavor to your visit. Budgeting for meals can be easy, as Tulsa boasts a wide range of family-friendly restaurants, from casual diners to more upscale options. Don't forget to check if places like The Gathering Place have any special events or programs running during your visit; they often have unique offerings that can enhance the experience even further. All in all, our first experience in Tulsa was nothing short of wonderful, thanks in large part to the incredible family activities available. The Gathering Place stands out as a world-class park that absolutely delivers on its promise of fun for everyone. If you’re planning a trip or live nearby, do yourself a favor and dedicate some serious time to exploring all the family-friendly gems this Oklahoma city has to offer. You won't regret it!
