📚 What Trope Would You Defend Forever?
For me, it’s the small town with a secret and there’s a reason this trope works across so many genres.
Whether it’s mystery, horror, paranormal, romance, or fantasy, small towns are powerful settings because they force proximity. Characters can’t disappear, avoid each other, or outrun their past. Everyone knows something… and no one knows everything.
From a writing perspective, small towns naturally create:
• tension through closeness
• layered secrets and shared history
• emotional stakes that ripple through the community
• consequences that don’t stay contained
When a town looks perfect on the surface, it creates contrast, and contrast is where story thrives.
It’s also why I chose this setting for my novel The Missing Reflection. The town appears quiet and charming, but the deeper you dig, the more unsettling it becomes.
