✂️ Editing Has Begun (Send Snacks…seriously)
I’ve officially entered the editing phase, also known as the moment you realize past you was very enthusiastic… and a little wordy.
Editing can feel contradictory, especially if you’re an underwriter or someone who already feels like they don’t put enough on the page. You’re told to cut, tighten, reduce, but also deepen, clarify, and strengthen.
Here’s what’s helping me navigate that balance:
1️⃣ Cut Redundancy, Not Substance
If a scene or paragraph is repeating information we already know, that’s where to trim. Keep the idea, lose the echo. Cutting repetition often creates space to strengthen what actually matters.
2️⃣ Replace Filler With Specificity
Instead of adding more words, add better ones. Swap vague description or internal monologue for a single concrete detail that does more work. One strong sentence can replace three weak ones.
3️⃣ Beef Up Purpose
When revising, ask: Why does this scene exist?
If the answer isn’t clear, adjust the goal, tension, or character shift, this will naturally add to the word count. Purpose gives a scene weight without bloating it.
Editing is all about making the book sharper.

If the answer is unclear, I either revise it to heighten tension or character development or consider cutting it to maintain momentum. This approach not only improves clarity but also naturally balances word count by removing unnecessary fluff. Throughout the editing process, patience is vital. I keep snacks at hand—sometimes that little break helps recharge creativity and focus. Moreover, using tools like track changes and comments facilitates reviewing revisions systematically. In summary, successful editing doesn't mean just cutting words; it means enhancing the impact of every sentence.
