All I wanted was to see a sea turtle

Seeing sea turtles in Hawaii was an absolute dream come true for me, especially after hoping for just one and then spotting a dozen! On Maui, places like Maluaka Beach (sometimes referred to as Turtle Town) and Ka'anapali Beach are known for snorkelers to see them in the water. For a truly unique experience, parts of the Big Island, like Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with its striking black sand, are also famous for basking Honu. Each island offers unique opportunities to spot them, whether on land or in the crystal-clear waters. It's super important to remember that these are wild, protected animals. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) highly recommends keeping a safe distance of at least 10 feet (about 3 meters) from all sea turtles, both on land and in the water. This means absolutely no touching, no chasing, and definitely no feeding them. It's all about observing them respectfully in their natural habitat. My heart skipped a beat just watching them from a distance, completely undisturbed. They truly look like ancient, wise beings soaking up the sun, completely at peace. Bringing a good pair of binoculars can greatly enhance your viewing experience, allowing you to get a 'closer' look without disturbing them or infringing on their space. And don't forget your camera, but make sure to use a zoom lens rather than getting physically too close for that perfect shot. Capturing their beauty from a respectful distance is part of the experience. My pictures certainly don't do justice to the profound feeling of seeing them in their element! Remember, their presence on the beach is often for resting and thermoregulation. Disturbing them can cause stress and interrupt vital processes. Seeing them gracefully navigate the sand and the waves is a privilege. Experiencing wildlife like this responsibly makes the memory even more special and contributes to their conservation.
