🩺NIGHT NURSE💤 5 Reasons why I love it!

5 REASONS WHY I LOVE BEING A NIGHT NURSE!1️⃣ Low stimuli- 🌠

I personally love working when lights are dim, there aren’t a million call lights going off at once, staff such as management, PT, therapists, speech, etc are not on nights. Patients wake infrequently on my unit overnight and the bulk of my work is the last hour of my shift waking certain patients for care.

2️⃣ Pay Differential-💰

Goes without saying, this is definitely a perk working night shift. We get $3/hr more. (I’m interested in the comments section if anyone else gets more? Less? Day differential instead?

3️⃣ Keeping appointments-📆

Before working night shift I felt like I was constantly having to cancel or reschedule appointments, which can be difficult when my working hours are the same hours open for offices. Working nights I can still go to all of my day appointments and sleep around it. I also have gone straight to the beach after work and slept there! Lots of options depending how many days in a row you’re on, hours per shift, etc.

4️⃣More time to look up patients-💻

I personally love having the extra computer time on night shift rather than bedside care; it gives me plenty of time to look up the patients on the unit and give an extremely thorough report for the day shift RN. (Pro tip: Make copies of a thorough report and hand out to oncoming RN) They always appreciate writing down less and having information day shift usually does not have the time to sit down and look up.

5️⃣ Home while my dog’s awake!🐶

This may sound crazy to some, but I totally appreciate being home during my dog’s waking hours! I feel like he doesn’t miss me when he is sleeping at night, and I have plenty of hours during the day before I sleep for the next night shift. I feel less guilty and happy that I’m able to be around him more.

... Read moreNight nursing can be an incredibly rewarding job for those who thrive in quieter, less hectic environments. One of the key benefits is the low-stimuli work environment, allowing nurses to focus more deeply on their patient care without the constant interruptions common during day shifts. Moreover, many hospitals offer pay differentials for night shifts, giving nurses an incentive to embrace this unique working schedule. Additionally, working nights can provide a great opportunity to maintain a better work-life balance. Night nurses often find they have more flexibility for personal appointments and activities, creating a schedule that accommodates both professional responsibilities and personal well-being. The quieter hours also allow for more dedicated time to research and connect with patients, improving the quality of care provided during the day shift handover. Finally, for pet owners, a night shift can mean more time spent at home with beloved pets during their waking hours, which can greatly enhance the quality of life. If you're considering a nursing career, exploring the advantages of night shifts may lead to fulfilling personal and professional growth.
