Every time I hang out with friends, someone says “let’s get food,” which I’m always down for, but it adds up fast. Especially in the summer when we’re always making plans. So, I’ve been finding cute, cheap ways to hang out that don’t drain the bank account. Here are 5 go-to ideas I have been loving lately!
... Read moreIt's so easy to fall into the trap of spending too much when hanging out with friends, especially in college! I totally get it – sometimes it feels like every social outing needs to involve a pricey meal or an expensive activity. But over the past few semesters, my friends and I have gotten really creative, and I've found that some of our best memories come from the most budget-friendly experiences.
Beyond the five ideas I mentioned, I wanted to share a few more tips and expand on how we make these cheap activities even more fun and memorable, really focusing on those fun group activities college students can enjoy without breaking the bank.
For our dorm movie nights, we’ve elevated it beyond just watching a film. We pick a theme – think 80s classics, cheesy rom-coms, or even a horror marathon – and then create a cozy atmosphere. String up some fairy lights, pile up blankets and pillows, and instead of buying expensive snacks, we do a DIY popcorn bar with different seasonings or make our own giant cookies. One time, we even challenged ourselves to make a dish inspired by the movie playing! It’s a fantastic way to bond right in your room without spending a dime on tickets or overpriced concessions, fitting perfectly into the category of things to do at home with friends.
And speaking of food, for picnics, we've learned to make it a potluck. Everyone brings one dish, whether it’s some homemade sandwiches, a fruit salad, or a bag of chips. It cuts down on individual costs and introduces everyone to new snacks! We also bring along a deck of cards, a frisbee, or even a portable speaker for some background music. Finding a scenic park or even just a nice spot on campus can turn a simple meal into a delightful afternoon.
When it comes to outdoor adventures like hiking or a beach day, my friends and I always do a bit of research beforehand. We look for local trails that are free to access or state parks with minimal entrance fees. Packing our own water bottles, snacks, and a portable speaker makes these trips even more enjoyable and budget-friendly. It’s amazing how a simple change of scenery and some fresh air can refresh everyone, making it one of the best cheap things to do with friends.
If you're looking for more things to do at home with friends, consider a themed game night! Dig out those old board games, a deck of cards, or even charades. My group loves hosting a "Chopped" style cooking challenge where everyone brings a mystery ingredient and we try to create something delicious together. It’s hilarious, creative, and you get a meal out of it! Another hit is a craft night – gather up any art supplies you have (old magazines for collages, paints, or yarn) and just create. It’s incredibly therapeutic and fosters great conversation.
Finally, expanding on the flea market idea, make it a scavenger hunt! Give everyone a small budget (like $5-10) and a list of quirky items to find. Who can find the funniest mug? The most unique piece of jewelry? It turns a casual browse into an exciting competition. Or just go with the goal of finding unique gifts for each other's birthdays. These kinds of activities prove that with a little creativity, fun group activities for college students don't have to cost a fortune. It's all about making memories together, not spending money.
