These APPS are supposed to help you LOCK IN 📵

I just downloaded both of these focus apps that keep you from using your phone when you’re supposed to be doing other things 👀

I’m hoping it helps me focus, especially going into the new school year :)

Have you ever used them? Do you think they work?

Lmk!!

... Read moreStepping into a new school year always brings a mix of excitement and a little bit of dread – mostly because I know how easily I get distracted! My phone is usually the biggest culprit, so I've been on the hunt for effective tools to help me 'lock in' and really boost my study focus. That's why I decided to give Focus Friend and Opal a try, and I wanted to share my initial thoughts and what I've learned so far. My Experience with Focus Friend & Opal Starting with Focus Friend, it's been a game-changer for just getting started. The idea of planting a virtual tree while I study, and having it wither if I leave the app, really motivates me to stay on task. It's a simple concept, but seeing that little plant grow as I commit to my study sessions gives me a tangible reward. It's great for those times when I just need to block out all the noise and concentrate on a single task, like reading a chapter or working through practice problems. Then there's Opal, which has a slightly different approach but is equally powerful, especially with its unique accountability features. What really drew me to Opal is the option to set up an accountability partner or even get friend approval for my focus sessions. This is huge for me because sometimes the biggest struggle isn't just internal distraction, but the feeling that I'm only accountable to myself. Knowing that a friend can see my focus goals and progress, or even remotely approve my session, adds an extra layer of commitment. It's like having a study buddy even when you're studying alone, which helps so much with motivation, especially for those tougher subjects like chemistry or geography that sometimes feel like a real uphill battle. Beyond the Apps: Staying Motivated for Challenging Subjects While these apps are fantastic for limiting distractions and getting started, I've found that true motivation, especially for subjects like chemistry or geography, often needs a multi-pronged approach. Sometimes, even with apps like Focus Friend and Opal, I still feel unmotivated. Here are a few things that have helped me keep going: Break it Down: Instead of looking at a huge chemistry chapter, I break it into smaller, manageable chunks. Completing a small section feels like a win and builds momentum. Find the 'Why': For geography, I try to connect the concepts to real-world events or places I want to visit. For chemistry, understanding how it applies to everyday life or other fields can make it more interesting. Vary Your Study Methods: If reading notes isn't working, I switch to watching educational videos, drawing diagrams, or explaining concepts out loud to an imaginary audience (or a real one!). Reward System: Beyond the app's internal rewards, I set small personal rewards for completing tough study sessions – a short break, a favorite snack, or a few minutes of guilt-free scrolling. Study Environment: Making sure my study space is tidy and free of physical distractions makes a huge difference. Even just having a dedicated spot helps signal to my brain that it's time to focus. These focus apps, particularly with Opal's accountability partner features, have significantly improved my time management and organization. They've become vital tools in my academic arsenal. If you're struggling with staying focused or finding motivation, especially with challenging subjects, I'd definitely recommend exploring apps like Focus Friend and Opal. They might just be the push you need to not only limit distractions but also cultivate a more productive and enjoyable study routine.
