Pet peeves/boundaries as a FTM during pregnancy

... Read morePregnancy is a unique journey for everyone, and as a first-time trans man (FTM), it comes with its own set of challenges that aren't always openly discussed. One of the biggest hurdles I've encountered is managing the endless commentary on how active I should be. People often ask if I lay around too much or compare my pregnancy tiredness to their work exhaustion. This comparison feels invalidating because pregnancy fatigue is not just tiredness; it can be overwhelming and draining in a way that’s hard to describe. Setting clear personal boundaries has been crucial. I learned early on to gently but firmly let others know that questions about my activity levels or unsolicited advice about my body aren’t helpful. It’s important to prioritize your mental and physical well-being and communicate this with people around you. Another boundary that helped protect my peace was distancing myself from drama, which is unfortunately common in many friendships. During pregnancy, emotional energy is limited, and minimizing stress is vital. I had to cut ties with friends who brought unnecessary negativity or tried to undermine my relationship. It might seem drastic, but it helped me maintain a healthier mindset. Also, unsolicited opinions about baby care—like tests, vaccines, or parenting choices—can feel overwhelming. At the end of the day, you know what’s best for you and your baby. I found it empowering to take ownership of those decisions and kindly remind others that I appreciate support but will make those choices on my own timeline. Lastly, hearing horror pregnancy or birth stories was particularly difficult as a first-timer. I chose to avoid those conversations altogether, focusing instead on positive preparation and mental health support. It’s okay to protect yourself from negativity and seek out uplifting and informative content. If you’re an FTM on this journey, remember you’re not alone in feeling these pressures and frustrations. Setting boundaries, protecting your mental health, and being your own advocate are key parts of a healthy pregnancy experience.
