The tradition of bathing monks. It is one of the most important and sacred activities in the Songkran festival of Thailand.

📖 The meaning of "wash the water."

Washing water is the pouring of perfume or clean water on the Buddha to show respect, humility, and perform religious rituals on Songkran Day.

The word "to wash" means to cleanse with water gracefully (unlike "splash" or "" for fun).

⏰, when and where?

This is done during Songkran Festival (13-15 April), especially the morning of 13-14 April.

Usually done at temples (both big temples and rural temples)

Some houses with house Buddhas will also wash water at home.

🎯. Belief and purpose.

Cleansing the Bad - Believing that the water that cleanses the monk will cleanse the sins, old deeds, suffering, and auspices of the past year.

Bring in the good things - it's a summons to the auspicious, happy and prosperous things in the new year.

Showing gratitude - paying homage to the Buddha, and Rattarat.

New Year's Blessings - Many people will pray for blessings while washing water.

🪔 How to make water (Main Steps)

Prepare:

Perfume (Thai baked water) or clean water mixed perfume

Silver bowl, gold bowl or boycott

Flowers (jasmine, rose, apple, flower, champa)

Incense, candles.

Yellow trichiva cloth (sometimes)

Procedure:

Light incense candles to the monk.

Take the perfume, pour it on the Buddha image (starting from the head → the body → the Buddha base) softly and respectfully.

Drop flowers at the monk base.

Three times, praying.

Note: The bathing of the monk must be done with courtesy, calm and respect, not splashing water.

📸. Often seen at festivals.

The great Buddha was poured down by water in thin strings.

There are petals floating in the water at the base of the monk.

A polite dresser (Thai or white dress) stands in the water with faith.

The atmosphere was warm, sacred, with morning sunshine and a thin fog.
