"U.S. Defense" Reveals Seized "Stateless Tanker" Sanctioned for Transporting Iranian Oil, Carrying 2 Million Barrels of Crude Oil in International Waters, Indian Ocean Near Sri Lanka
The United States Department of Defense revealed that U.S. forces overran a boycotted stateless tanker in international waters last night.
The ship was named M / T Tifani, which was banned by the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for transporting Iranian oil.
According to the Marine Traffic tracking website, this attack on the ship occurred in the Indian Ocean.
The United States Department of Defense, or Pentagon, stated through a message on Platform X: "As we have clearly declared our position, we will take global maritime law enforcement measures to destroy illegal networks and intercept boycotted ships that provide raw material assistance to Iran wherever they operate."
While the U.S. military stated that it had boarded the tanker without incident, that the ship was capable of carrying two million barrels of crude oil, and that it was reported to be in close proximity to Sri Lanka, the data showed that the ship had been almost fully loaded and had notified its destination as Singapore.
So far, however, Iran has not commented, but this move could make efforts to hold peace talks even more difficult.
This latest operation comes just days after the U.S. Navy opened fire and took over an Iranian merchant ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday.
