Choosing the right family sedan felt like a huge mission for my growing family! We needed something stylish but, most importantly, spacious enough for two car seats, a stroller, and all the gear that comes with having little ones. My husband and I narrowed it down to two contenders: the Cadillac ATS-L and the BMW 3 Series Li. Both are luxury sedans, but which one truly delivers on interior practicality for a family? First, let's talk about the Cadillac ATS-L. I loved the sleek lines and the comfortable front seats. When it came to the back, installing our bulky infant car seat was a bit of a squeeze. The LATCH anchors were accessible, but getting the seat secured without bumping the front seats required some finesse. Once in, our toddler's forward-facing seat fit reasonably well, but legroom for them was just adequate, not sprawling. Trunk space was decent – we could fit our compact stroller and a few bags of groceries, but planning any larger trips would definitely require strategic packing. For a single child or older kids, it might be perfect, but with two car seats, it felt a tad tighter than I'd hoped. Then we test-drove the BMW 3 Series Li. The 'Li' stands for long wheelbase, and you can really feel that extra space! Right off the bat, the rear doors seemed to open wider, making car seat installation a noticeable improvement. The LATCH system felt a bit more intuitive, and there was definitely more breathing room between the front seats and the rear-facing car seat. Our toddler had more knee room in their forward-facing seat, which means fewer complaints on longer drives – a huge win in my book! The overall cabin felt a touch more open, perhaps due to the design or slightly lower console. Trunk space was comparable to the ATS-L, perhaps marginally larger, and definitely sufficient for our daily needs. Beyond just car seats, we considered overall comfort. Both cars have premium materials, but the BMW's rear bench felt a little more sculpted for passengers, even if it's still a sedan. The infotainment systems are both user-friendly, but when you're juggling kids, ease of access to climate control and other features is paramount. The BMW seemed to have a slight edge in intuitive layout for us. For families like ours, constantly needing to load and unload kids and their essentials, that extra bit of rear legroom and easier car seat access in the BMW 3 Series Li made a significant difference. While the ATS-L is a beautiful car, the BMW Li variant truly seemed designed with family comfort in mind. It really comes down to how much 'stuff' and how many car-seated passengers you'll be hauling around. For us, the BMW 3 Series Li edged out the Cadillac ATS-L when it came to maximizing interior space for our family's busy life.
