... Read moreHey everyone! As someone who frequently travels between New Jersey and New York City, I know firsthand how navigating the various tunnels can be a bit daunting, especially if you're not familiar with them. I've had my fair share of stressful commutes and exciting trips, and along the way, I've picked up some essential tips that I just have to share to make your journey smoother! When you're thinking about tunnels in New Jersey that connect to NYC, two big names immediately come to mind: the Holland Tunnel and the Lincoln Tunnel. Each has its own vibe and serves different parts of Manhattan, so knowing which one to pick can save you a lot of time and headache. The Holland Tunnel: This one usually lets you out in Lower Manhattan, right near iconic neighborhoods like SoHo, Tribeca, and the Financial District. I often choose the Holland if I'm heading downtown for a weekend brunch or to catch a ferry. It's a historic tunnel, opened way back in 1927, and it's quite an experience driving through it. Be prepared for narrower lanes and don't expect much cell service inside! Traffic can be a beast, especially during morning and evening rush hours, so checking your GPS before you leave is always a good idea. The Lincoln Tunnel: If your destination is Midtown Manhattan – think Times Square, the Theater District, or anywhere near Port Authority – the Lincoln Tunnel is your go-to. It has three tubes, which sometimes helps with traffic flow, but honestly, it can get just as congested as the Holland. I remember one time I was heading to a Broadway show and got stuck in Lincoln Tunnel traffic for what felt like an eternity! Lesson learned: always factor in extra time. My Top Tips for a Smoother Tunnel Experience: EZ-Pass is Your Best Friend: Seriously, if you don't have one, get one! Both tunnels are cashless tolling, and having an EZ-Pass means you just drive through without fumbling for cash or worrying about getting a bill in the mail later. It saves so much time. Timing is Everything: Avoid peak rush hours (typically 6-9 AM and 4-7 PM on weekdays) if you can. Weekends can also be busy, especially Sunday evenings as people head back into the city. I've found early mornings on weekends to be the most pleasant. Check Traffic Apps: Before you even leave your driveway, pull up Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps. They'll give you real-time traffic updates and can often suggest the quickest route, even if it means taking a slightly different approach to the tunnel entrance. Know Your Exit: Once you're out of the tunnel, Manhattan traffic hits you fast. Have a general idea of your route once you emerge so you're not scrambling to change lanes last minute. Stay Calm and Drive Safely: Tunnels can feel a bit claustrophobic, and drivers sometimes get aggressive. Keep your distance, adhere to the speed limit, and breathe! It’s just a temporary part of your journey. Choosing between the Holland and Lincoln really depends on where you're going in Manhattan. If you're heading south of 34th Street, the Holland Tunnel is usually more direct. For anything north of 34th Street up to around 59th Street, the Lincoln Tunnel is typically preferred. While driving offers flexibility, sometimes taking public transport like the PATH train from New Jersey into NYC can be a less stressful option, especially for daily commuters. But for those times you need your car, hopefully, these little insights from my own experiences help you navigate the New Jersey to NYC tunnels like a seasoned pro! What are your tunnel tips?
