I Had No Choice but to Leave Her Behind
I went to the dentist today for a second opinion on a problem tooth. What I didn’t realize was how much pregnancy had changed my body—and how much more this appointment would end up showing me.
When I walked in, the receptionist was this pretty Black woman with a soft but confident tone. Warm, welcoming, and full of energy. As she checked me in, we got to talking about divorce since insurance always changes after situations like that. She said to me, “Oh yes, divorce. I’ve been through it. I had to divorce something else too.” She gave me this look like I should’ve known what she meant. I heard her clearly, but I didn’t understand, so I just smiled and went on to sit down.
A little later, the assistant called me back and even got my name a little off—Christin instead of Christian. I corrected her, and she laughed it off before telling me the dentist would be in shortly. I sat down and ended up dozing off—what felt like 30 minutes was really about 7.
The dentist walked in, a sweet and enthusiastic woman, maybe Filipina. She immediately made me feel comfortable. I apologized for falling asleep, explaining that my little ones keep me up at night, but she smiled and told me never to apologize. She was a mom of three small kids herself, still breastfeeding, and she completely understood. Honestly, I was impressed—here she was, a full-time dentist and full-time mom. She called me a superhero, but really, I thought the same about her.
She introduced me to her assistant, who, funny enough, had the same last name as me. The two of them clearly enjoyed working together. We all got to talking about life, and before long, divorce came up again. The assistant shared her story and said the exact same thing I’d heard earlier: “I had to divorce something else too.”
I was caught off guard. Twice in one day, the exact same words.
On the way home, I kept replaying it in my head. Then, as I shared the experience with my mom, I realized what they meant. Divorce isn’t just leaving a marriage. Divorce is leaving behind a version of yourself. She may have stayed quiet, allowed mistreatment, ignored betrayal, and didn’t know her worth. You divorce her.
And who do you become after that? Well… that’s the journey I’m on now.
