This Poem Is as Short as Our Relationship Was
From my upcoming collection “things i never got to tell you” releasing May 27th!
Sometimes, the shortest poems hit the hardest, don't they? It's incredible how a few carefully chosen words can sum up an entire emotional journey, much like trying to distill a complex relationship into a brief memory. When I stumbled upon this piece, it immediately made me think about how much raw emotion can be packed into something so concise. It reminds me of the feelings evoked when searching for poems that delve into profound intimacy or complex emotions – themes often found in pieces that explore vulnerability, like those about 'talking in their sleep' or the delicate dance of commitment, as in 'never love unless you can.' We often look for these poetic 'summaries' not just to understand the poem itself, but to find reflections of our own experiences, our own heartbreaks, or moments of intense, fleeting connection. Even after a connection might have been brief, the memories linger. It's not just the big moments, but those little sensory details that stick with you. Like how their bedroom used to smelled like, a specific scent that instantly transports you back. Or the almost forgotten taste of a shared meal, a particular brand of coffee, or even the air during a quiet moment. You might miss the way they used to hum while getting ready, perhaps even when she used a curler in the morning, a tiny, intimate habit. These aren't just details; they're anchors to what was, making even the shortest love story feel incredibly rich in retrospect. That's the magic of a short poem. It doesn't need to chronicle every date or every conversation to convey the weight of a relationship, no matter how brief. It acts as a mirror, allowing us to project our own feelings of love, loss, and longing onto its lines. It can capture the essence of a 'talking in their sleep' moment – those subconscious truths that emerge – or the profound commitment (or fear of it) expressed in 'never love unless you can.' It proves that impact isn't measured in pages, but in resonance. This kind of poetry, brief and powerful, offers a space for reflection. It doesn't tell you what to feel, but rather nudges you to explore your own emotions surrounding what was, what could have been, and what lingers. It’s a quiet conversation with your own heart, prompting you to acknowledge the beauty and the pain of connections, no matter their duration. Sometimes, a poem is the perfect 'summary' not just of an experience, but of the complex feelings that follow. It helps you process those moments when love felt both incredibly present and incredibly fleeting, leaving behind scents and tastes and a lingering sense of miss that you can't quite shake. It makes you realize that sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones told with the fewest words, inviting us to fill in the blanks with our own pasts.
