Day 1 of my solo trip VS Day 7

3/19 Edited to

... Read moreSolo traveling when managing chronic illness and invisible disabilities is truly a unique experience that few can fully understand without living it. I’ve personally found that while the initial excitement fuels me with energy and optimism, by Day 7, my body and mind often reach their limits. On Day 1, I was energized and ready to explore, just like the photo showing me happily enjoying Panera, excited to take on the world. However, chronic illness means you have to constantly gauge your energy levels—commonly referred to as "spoons" in the spoonie community. By Day 7, much like the image of me exhausted on the train doing a peace sign, I was running low on spoons. The overstimulation from travel, navigating accessibility, and managing symptoms can drain even the strongest spirits. Traveling disabled or with chronic illness involves planning for rest and pacing oneself, which is tough in unfamiliar environments. I recommend choosing accommodations close to medical facilities, carrying essential medications, and having backup plans for low-energy days. Additionally, being open about invisible disabilities helps create awareness and sometimes results in unexpected support from fellow travelers or locals. Despite the fatigue and challenges, solo travel can be empowering. It fosters independence and helps build mental resilience. Sharing these realities is important in raising disability awareness and encouraging others who might hesitate to travel due to their health conditions. Every day of travel is a victory, and even on the hardest days, the experiences and personal growth are invaluable.
