2 Days in Rome 🏛️ This is what I'd do differently

I underestimated Rome. 🏛️🍕

I arrived ready to conquer the Eternal City, but I made some rookie mistakes that left me "shagged out" by day two. Rome is majestic, but the crowds and logistics are no joke.

If I could redo my 48 hours in Roma, this is exactly how I would do it. Save this post so you don't make the same mistakes! 👇

🏛️ THE VATICAN REALITY CHECK

The 7 AM Myth: I thought arriving at 7 AM meant no lines. WRONG. We still waited 15 mins.

The Sacrifice: I wanted to climb the Dome and see the Museums. I realized too late I didn't have time for both.

My Advice: Book your museum slot for later in the day if you want to climb the dome. Don't try to squeeze it all in or you will get "museumed out."

🍨 THE FOOD TRUTH

Giolitti Disappointment: Everyone says go to Giolitti. I went. It was crowded, rushed, and my gelato had ice crystals in it. 🧊

The Real Winner: Skip the hype and go to Pompi near the Spanish Steps. Their Tiramisu saved my life.

Breakfast: Stand at the bar and order a Maritozzo (cream bun). Even if it's chaotic, just breathe and take it in.

🚍 LOGISTICS & MISTAKES

The Borghese Error: I thought it wasn't popular and I could just walk in. Nope. Sold out. Book this weeks in advance!

The Appian Way: Great backup plan if you miss Borghese, but don't stay too late. It gets scary at dusk and the buses back were JAMMED.

💡 3 Things to Know Before You Go:

Water is Free: Drink from the nasoni (street fountains). It's cold and safe.

Validating Tickets: If you take the bus, validate your ticket or you will get fined.

Airport Train Secret: At Termini, go to Platform 24 for the Leonardo Express. No need to buy a ticket, just tap your credit card at the gate!

Has anyone else been "museumed out" in Rome? Let me know in the comments! 🍋

... Read moreBased on my experiences and the various trips to Rome since, I’d add a few extra tips that really enhance your visit and save you from common pitfalls. First, when choosing where to eat gelato, avoiding the tourist-trap spots like Giolitti can make a big difference. Pompi, near the Spanish Steps, offers an indulgent tiramisu and tasty desserts that feel like a true local treat rather than a rushed experience. Try to visit Pompi during less busy hours to fully enjoy the atmosphere and flavors. Next, when it comes to exploring Rome’s open-air sites such as the Appian Way, timing is crucial. While it’s a fantastic detour, avoid staying until dusk due to safety concerns and limited transport options afterward. Consider renting a bike or joining a small group tour in the late afternoon to get the best of the historical setting with others who share your pace. If you’re interested in less crowded gems beyond the major tourist hubs, researching grocery markets or small family-owned cafes can introduce you to authentic Roman life. While I personally didn’t have time to explore local markets, many travelers recommend Campo de' Fiori early in the morning for fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere. Lastly, for transportation, remember to validate your bus tickets to avoid fines, and use the Leonardo Express train from Termini airport without needing a traditional ticket—just tap your credit card at the gate for a smooth start or end to your trip. Planning museum tickets like Borghese weeks ahead is critical to avoid disappointment, as walk-ins are rarely available. These extras, paired with pacing yourself and avoiding overloading each day, will help transform a rushed visit into a relaxed and memorable journey through Rome’s historic and culinary delights.
