Get out of London! 24 Hours in York 🇬🇧

POV: You take a day trip to York, and the sky opens up. 🌧️

I took the train from London expecting a postcard-perfect day, but I got a downpour. But honestly? The rain made the city feel even more medieval.

York is incredible, but you need a strategy to make the most of 24 hours. If I could redo my 24 hours in York, this is exactly how I would do it.

Here are a few things that saved my trip (and one that didn't):

🛑 THE MISTAKES I MADE:

The "8 PM" Hunger Games: I thought I could eat late like in London. WRONG. Pub kitchens here close strictly at 8:00 PM (or even earlier). I ended up shivering in a Tesco and settling for spicy chicken because I missed the window. Tip: Eat dinner by 6:30 PM.

The Data Trap: I relied on data roaming without a voice line. Big mistake when you need to call the Inn to find out what is happening when there was no one to help me check-in.

The Cat Trail: I tried to do the "Cat Statue" walking tour (which was a truly random find). It was freezing and consumed way too many steps. Skip it if you only have 24 hours - save your energy for the Minster.

✅ THE WINS:

The Pastry Hack: Go to Cornish Bakery and get the Vanilla Fruit Slice (it’s custard-soaked heaven, not a tart). Don't eat inside, take it to Museum Gardens for the best view of St Mary's Abbey ruins.

The Snickelways: Everyone walks the Shambles. I dove into the "Snickelways" (tiny medieval alleys). They are quiet, free, and feel like stepping back to 1400s England.

The "Sanctuary" Hack:

If it starts pouring, don't just hide in a cafe. Head to York Minster for Evensong. It’s free (no ticket needed), and sitting in that vast cathedral listening to the choir while the rain hammered down outside was the most peaceful moment of the trip.

Minster Strategy: The entry ticket is pricey, but the free guided tour inside is amazing. It was way better than the Undercroft museum in the basement.

✨ I wrote a full "No-BS" guide on the blog, including my exact itinerary and the specific places I missed.

... Read moreVisiting York in the rain can surprisingly turn into one of the most memorable experiences. When I took a day trip from London, the unexpected downpour initially felt like a setback, but it actually added an atmospheric charm that made the city’s medieval streets and alleys feel truly authentic. One of the best strategies to enjoy York in a limited timeframe is to embrace its unique charm instead of fighting the weather. For instance, the famous Snickelways offer a peaceful retreat from the more crowded Shambles and let you wander through narrow, cobbled medieval alleys that transport you back to 1400s England. These quiet walks are perfect for photography or simply soaking in the historical vibe without breaking the bank. When hunger strikes, do not miss out on Cornish Bakery’s Vanilla Fruit Slice—a custard-soaked delight that’s perfect to grab and enjoy outdoors. Instead of settling inside a cafe, bring your pastry to Museum Gardens where you can enjoy beautiful views of St Mary’s Abbey ruins, combining great taste with a stunning backdrop. If the weather gets harsher, York Minster becomes a sanctuary. Attending the free Evensong choir performance not only provides shelter but also allows a rare glimpse into York’s spiritual and architectural beauty. It’s a peaceful escape from the rain where the echoes of the choir fill the grand cathedral, creating a calming and almost mystical experience. A key lesson in York is to plan meal times carefully. Unlike London’s more flexible dining hours, many pubs and eateries in York close kitchen services by 8 PM or earlier. Eating dinner by 6:30 PM ensures you enjoy local flavors without the stress of rushed dining or disappointment. Lastly, avoid relying solely on data roaming without a proper voice line for emergencies or last-minute arrangements such as hotel check-ins—this can complicate your trip unnecessarily. For travellers seeking a day trip rich in history, scenic walks, and authentic local flavors, York delivers—rain or shine. Taking these tips on board will help maximize your 24-hour visit and leave you with incredible memories of this medieval gem.
