Desensitization is important for any dog not just service dogs. @Tristen Topham @razthespaz_sd #servicedogprospect #servicedogintraining #servicedogsoftiktok
From my experience training dogs in various environments, sound desensitization is a crucial but often overlooked aspect of obedience and service training. When the weather is bad, continuing training outdoors can be challenging, but focusing on sound desensitization—such as exposure to other dogs barking—can be done indoors or in sheltered areas. This helps dogs become less reactive and more comfortable with everyday sounds. I found that pairing the exposure to the sound of barking with positive reinforcement, like treats or praise, can gradually reduce anxiety or over-excitement. Starting with low volume and gradually increasing the intensity allows dogs to build tolerance without stress. This is especially important for service dogs, who need to remain composed despite distractions, but it benefits all dogs by reducing noise-related behavioral issues. Incorporating play and calm behavior rewards during these sound exposure sessions also reinforces a positive emotional response. Every dog is different, so patience and consistency are key. Regular practice, even in short sessions, makes a big difference over time. By prioritizing sound desensitization, trainers and dog owners can ensure that their pets are well-prepared, confident, and less likely to react negatively to everyday auditory stimuli.
