Traveling as a PhD student can be both thrilling and challenging. In November 2022, I managed to book three flights in one month, uniquely balancing academic responsibilities with travel adventures. My travels took me from the historic streets of Boston to the tropical destinations of Big Island and Kauai, each offering a distinct experience. Boston, rich in history and education, was a great starting point, allowing me to experience its famous culture, food, and vibrant atmosphere. I explored renowned universities, enjoyed local cuisine, and took in scenic views that inspired my academic journey. Meanwhile, Hawaii, with its stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, provided a much-needed escape. In Kauai, I enjoyed hiking through lush valleys, relaxing on pristine beaches, and experiencing the warmth of Hawaiian hospitality. In Big Island, I was captivated by the unique volcanic landscapes and the rich history of the island. This month of travel not only allowed me to unwind but also enriched my academic experience. It reminded me of the importance of balancing work and play. Tips for fellow PhD students include planning ahead, utilizing academic breaks effectively, and immersing yourself in new cultures for a well-rounded educational experience. Whether it’s the bustling streets of Boston or the serene beaches of Kauai, each destination offers memories and lessons that go beyond the classroom.
