Las Posadas: A Tradition Deeper Than We Ever Knew
Okay y’all… we’ve been celebrating Las Posadas forever, but nobody EVER told us how deep this tradition really goes. Like… this is way more meaningful than just knocking on doors and singing.
Before all the Christian traditions came in, our ancestors were already celebrating Panquetzaliztli a whole month dedicated to honoring Huitzilopochtli. They raised banners, shared food, made offerings, and even created these little dough figures called tzoatl on the night of December 24th.
Yes, our people were celebrating long before Las Posadas became “a thing.”
When the Spanish arrived, those Indigenous traditions didn’t disappear they got blended with the story of Mary and Joseph looking for shelter.
And that mix is literally what created Las Posadas as we know it today.
And really ?
That’s what makes this tradition so beautiful to me.
It’s not just singing outside someone’s door or hitting a pi ñata.
It’s a tradition built on two histories, two cultures, and the same message: welcome people in, feed them, bring the community together.
Every candle we light, every home we walk into, every song, every piñata… it’s all carrying pieces of who we are and where we come from.
We’re honoring our roots without even realizing it.
Las Posadas is more than a holiday
it’s a reminder that our traditions survived, transformed, and are STILL here because our people refused to let them die.
Did y’all know this??
Or is this your first time hearing how deep this tradition actually goes?
Let’s talk about it, because this right here… this is our history.
