Ko shield
The shield is a ritual performed by Karen.
It is held after the rice is planted. In some areas it may be called differently, such as the "Ghost Ranch Appreciation Ceremony" or the "Ghost Ranch Phantom Worship Ceremony," but no matter what it is called, it all has a profound meaning and reflects a lifestyle that is firmly bound to nature.
The Koo Shield ceremony is an expression of gratitude to the sacred and the ghost of the field that keeps the rice growing well. It is a time when the villagers will wish the produce of the season to flourish completely, free from plant diseases and natural disasters.
In addition to being a spiritual ritual, the Kho Shield ceremony also has social and cultural meaning because it provides an opportunity for communities to come together, strengthen unity, and reinforce human-land bonds.
On the other hand, the ceremony is also a reminder of the reverence for nature and the life cycle of traditional farming that has been going along with Karen's way of life for generations.
