having OCD + driving
How OCD affects me driving.
I tend to avoid areas where I feel like I am more likely to encounter hazards, like highways, school zones, or high-traffic areas. Sometimes I just avoid driving all together, the anxiety and fear become so intense that I avoid driving whenever possible, relying on others for transportation.
I hate it so much, but I’m so scared of my thoughts on what could happen. I’m scared of accidentally hurting someone and I’m scared of someone accidentally hurting me. It’s just a mess in my head, but I truly wish driving didn’t stress me out.
Driving with OCD can be an overwhelming experience for many. This article highlights the common fears associated with driving, such as the anxiety of encountering potential hazards and the fear of causing or being involved in an accident. People with OCD often experience intrusive thoughts that exacerbate their anxiety while driving. Effective coping strategies can include seeking professional help, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and gradually exposing oneself to driving situations in a controlled manner. Joining support groups and engaging with others who share similar experiences can be beneficial as well. Understanding that driving anxiety is common among those with OCD can help normalize these feelings. Sharing stories and advice within a community can empower individuals to face their fears, making driving a less stressful part of everyday life.
