ending the cycle
Intergenerational trauma is trauma that gets passed down through generations. When I realized that the constant silence and frustration I was going through was intergenerational trauma, I knew I had to do something so my future kids would never have to experience the pain I went through.
I always kept my mouth shut and let my family tear me down because I believed that expressing how I felt was disrespectful. Growing up, I could not hang out with my friends or have a phone because my parents thought that it was dangerous. My grandparents were paranoid and believed that the world was a very dangerous place. They passed this belief to their kids and it truly made me feel so lonely. It was hard for me to make friends because I didn’t have a phone. Group chats and video calls were very popular at the time. It’s all they would talk about at lunch and in the hallways. People also eventually stopped inviting me to their parties because they knew I wouldn’t be able to go. I was tired of being silenced, feeling left out, and being shamed for wanting the bare minimum. I had to learn how to stand up for myself and express what I was truly feeling. It is mentally draining going back and forth with people who don’t want to listen. Slowly, but surely I will break the cycle.

Intergenerational trauma often manifests through learned behaviors and beliefs passed from one generation to another. Understanding its implications is crucial for healing and moving forward. Many individuals find themselves repeating patterns of silence and fear, stemming from their ancestors' experiences. It's important to recognize these patterns and confront them. Seeking therapy or joining support groups can provide the tools necessary to break free from these cycles. Embracing vulnerability allows for deeper connections and healing. Additionally, sharing one’s experiences can foster community support, creating spaces where individuals feel heard and validated. By addressing the roots of generational trauma and actively participating in one's healing journey, it becomes possible to create a more positive environment for future generations, ensuring that they do not inherit the burdens of the past. Moreover, collective awareness around mental health issues, such as anxiety and isolation associated with generational trauma, can encourage open discussions within families, promoting healthy communication and emotional expression. Taking small yet significant steps towards emotional resilience can make a profound difference in breaking the cycle of trauma. Understanding the historical context of traumas faced by previous generations, especially in communities affected by systemic issues, can further equip individuals to tackle their own challenges with a more informed perspective. Ultimately, by focusing on healing and creating a supportive atmosphere, the cycle can be ended, paving the way for healthier future generations.
