emotionless

People think I’m so unbothered, like nothing gets to me but the truth is, it’s just emotional shutdown. I don’t always feel calm or detached because I’ve mastered peace… it’s more like I’ve learned to go numb in certain situations. Emotions make me so uncomfortable mine and sometimes even other people’s. It’s like they ask too much of me, more than I know how to handle. Even when it’s barely much, I don’t know how to react.

Growing up I never saw my parents cry so I never cried as well. I always hid and cried because I thought it was so embarrassing. I still feel that way and I’m too ashamed to show my emotions even though it’s a normal thing.

I’m still learning how to sit with my feelings without judging them or running from them. But for now, my version of “unbothered” is often just me surviving in silence, keeping the storm on mute because I don’t know what else to do with it.

Many individuals shut down to shield themselves from the intensity of emotions, making it difficult to engage authentically with themselves and others. Understanding the root causes of this condition can foster empathy and encourage healing. Growing up in environments where emotions were not openly expressed can contribute to this disconnect. Many people, like the author, find themselves struggling to navigate their feelings due to societal norms that stigmatize vulnerability. This makes it vital to create safe spaces for dialogue about mental health. Initiatives aimed at raising mental health awareness, such as community workshops or support groups, are essential. They encourage individuals to share their experiences and confront the stigma associated with emotional expression. Therapy and counseling also provide crucial frameworks for individuals to unpack their feelings in a safe, non-judgmental environment, thus promoting healing and personal growth. Engaging with social media platforms that advocate for emotional expression can help normalize the conversation around vulnerability. Hashtags like #emotionallyvulnerable and #embracevulnerability play a significant role in fostering supportive online communities where individuals can feel less isolated in their struggles. Ultimately, the road to embracing one’s feelings is ongoing. It involves patience, courage, and sometimes the willingness to seek professional help. Acknowledging one's emotions and working through them can pave the way for deeper connections and a more fulfilling life.
