mama knows best
Adulthood really changed the way I see my parents. Growing up, I used to think they were way too strict it honestly put me into a depression. I wasn’t allowed to sleep over at friends’ houses, I couldn’t go to parties, and I felt like I was constantly being left out. I didn’t even get my first phone until I was 16, and even then, my mom would take it from me every night. She’d go through it too, and back then, that felt like such an invasion of my privacy. Meanwhile, all my friends had phones by the time they were 10 or 11 and were doing way more than I ever could. I remember feeling like I was trapped in my own home while everyone else was out living their lives.
But now that I’m older, I get it. I see the world through a different lens. There are so many dangers that I was completely unaware of back then predators online, peer pressure, drinking, drugs, unsafe situations. And even people you think you can trust can turn out to be the opposite. My parents weren’t trying to control me they were trying to protect me from a world that isn’t always kind or forgiving.
They didn’t want me to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were trying to give me boundaries that would keep me safe, even if it didn’t feel fair at the time. And while their methods felt harsh, I know now that it all came from a place of love and fear for my well being. I may not agree with every decision they made, but I understand them better now. And honestly, I’m grateful for the protection even if it took me years to see it that way.
