My siblings & I have a broken relationship

My siblings and I were never really close growing up, partly because I was a lot older than them. But now that I’m older, I do my best to look out for them. I make sure they’re fed, remind them they always have a place to stay at my home if they need it, and if they need money, I’ll pay them for small chores like walking my dog or doing my dishes. I just want them to know I’m here for them.

I’ve been trying to build a relationship with them, but it feels like they don’t really try with me. They won’t help me out with simple favors, and honestly, it hurts. I don’t expect much just a little effort back to show that they care, too.

At the end of the day, they’re my sisters, and I’ll probably always be there if they need me. I just hope that one day, they’ll not only notice everything I’ve done for them, but also start giving some of that love and effort back.

... Read moreNavigating broken relationships with siblings can be emotionally taxing, especially when you are the older sibling putting in effort without seeing much in return. Many face this challenge as age gaps and personal differences create distance during childhood, which can persist into adulthood. Building or rebuilding sibling relationships requires patience, clear communication, and healthy boundaries. One key aspect is recognizing when your efforts are one-sided. As the OCR content highlights, "Love can't be one sided forever, and maybe giving them space will make them realize the effort I've been putting in." Taking a step back doesn’t mean giving up but prioritizing your emotional well-being. This pause can sometimes encourage siblings to reevaluate their own role in the relationship and motivate reciprocal efforts. Balancing love and self-protection is essential. Setting boundaries about what you can and cannot offer helps reduce frustration and emotional burnout. It’s also important to express your feelings openly and honestly—letting your siblings know you desire closeness and mutual support, but that it takes effort from everyone. Engage in small shared activities or favors that can gradually nurture connection. The article’s author mentions paying siblings for chores like walking the dog or doing dishes as a way to build interaction. While this shows care, fostering organic exchanges and shared memories can deepen bonds beyond transactional interactions. Many experts suggest seeking family therapy if the relationship issues feel entrenched. Mediated conversations can uncover misunderstandings and encourage empathy, helping siblings heal past wounds. Meanwhile, embracing acceptance that the relationship may never be perfect but can still be meaningful is a healthy mindset. In summary, repairing broken sibling ties involves consistent yet balanced attempts at reaching out, honest communication about needs, and protecting your own peace. Understanding that relationships evolve and sometimes require space can guide you toward a healthier, more supportive dynamic with your siblings.

I relate to this so much. You can pour so much into family and still feel that gap. I hope they start showing up, too.

Yeah I know how that feels. Someone having a stranger in our life is better than blood. I had a fall out with my one of my sister and things are never been the same. Once I put that boundaries I start feeling different around them. So good luck to you hope things get better
