What age did you start cooking at?

Crazy but I started cooking at 25 years old whenever I moved out of my parents house. My mom has cooked for me since I was a baby. She is a really good cook and baker. I am still learning but so far I am having a lot of fun.. I find it easier to put things together and then bake it in the oven.

... Read moreBuilding on my recent discovery of kitchen joy, I wanted to share a bit more about why I'm loving this journey, especially since I started later in life. For years, I genuinely thought cooking was this huge, complex task only for seasoned pros. But moving out and realizing I couldn't rely on my amazing mom's meals forever was the push I needed. And honestly, it’s been one of the best surprises! One of the biggest reasons I now love to cook is the creative freedom. It’s like a puzzle, but with delicious results. You start with a few ingredients, and by the end, you’ve transformed them into something entirely new. There’s such a sense of accomplishment in a meal you’ve prepared yourself, even if it’s something super simple. Plus, it's so much cheaper and often healthier than eating out all the time. My wallet and my body are definitely thanking me! For anyone out there who, like me, felt intimidated by cooking, my biggest tip is to start with what feels easy and fun. For me, that’s undoubtedly the oven. The original post mentioned I find it easier to put things together and then bake them, and it’s true! Oven-baked meals are a game-changer for beginners. You do a bit of prep, pop it in, and let the heat do most of the work. It’s less hands-on and less stressful than juggling multiple pans on a stovetop. A simple sheet pan meal is my absolute go-to. For instance, I’ve been experimenting with baked salmon lately, just like you might see on a baking sheet with some seasoned veggies alongside. It’s so easy: just season your protein and vegetables, toss them with a little olive oil, spread them out on some aluminum foil on a baking sheet, and into the oven they go. Dinner is ready in under 30 minutes with minimal cleanup! Other favorites include roasted chicken and vegetables, or even simple baked potatoes with your favorite toppings. This newfound passion for cooking has also become a wonderful way to unwind after a long day. It’s meditative, focusing on chopping and stirring, and the smells that fill the kitchen are just so comforting. I'm learning new techniques slowly, trying out different spices, and even getting better at adjusting recipes on the fly. It's not about being perfect; it's about enjoying the process and nourishing myself. So, if you’re wondering if you can learn to love cooking, my answer is a resounding yes! Don't let your age or past experience stop you. Find what excites you, whether it's baking, grilling, or simple stir-fries, and just dive in. I’m still very much a learner, but I’m having a blast, and I hope my experience encourages someone else to pick up a spatula and find their own joy in the kitchen too!

I believe my first ever cooking lesson with my grandfather was at the age of 6 or 7 he then passed when I was 8 and ever since the love for cooking he instilled in me has stuck and I'm now 20!
