playing fetch in the hallway before bedtime
We’re having one last fetch session before bedtime! Hopefully he’s tired after. This little dude has too much energy tonight 😂 #lemon8challenge #petplaytime
Does your furry friend get a burst of energy right before bedtime? You know, those famous 'zoomies' that make you wonder if they'll ever settle down? I totally get it! My small, light-brown dog often has a sudden surge of excitement in the evenings, and finding a way to burn off that last bit of energy before sleep used to be a challenge. That's when we discovered the magic of hallway fetch! It might sound simple, but a good old-fashioned game of fetch right in our hallway has become a game-changer. It's perfect for when the weather isn't cooperating for outdoor play or when you just need a quick, contained activity to wind down. My dog absolutely loves chasing his blue and yellow toy down the length of our hallway with light wood flooring. It’s amazing how much running they can do in a relatively small space! To make your hallway fetch session a success and keep your dog engaged, here are a few tips I've picked up: Clear the Path: Before you start, make sure the hallway is clear of any obstacles. Those shoes by the door or that stack of books can be tripping hazards for a speedy pup. A clear run makes for a safe and fun game. Choose the Right Toy: Not all toys are created equal for indoor fetch. I find that a soft, lightweight toy like a plush ball or a squeaky buddy works best. It's less likely to cause damage if it bounces off a wall, and it's easy for your dog to pick up and carry back, especially for smaller breeds. Vary the Throws: Don't just throw straight every time. Sometimes I'll bounce the toy off a wall, or hide it slightly at the end of the hallway for him to sniff out. This adds a mental challenge that can be just as tiring as the physical exertion. Keep it Short and Sweet: The goal isn't an hour-long marathon. A 10-15 minute session is usually enough to take the edge off that evening energy. You want them to feel satisfied, not completely exhausted to the point of overstimulation. Make it a Routine: Just like with humans, dogs thrive on routine. Incorporating hallway fetch into our pre-bedtime ritual helps signal to my dog that it's time to start winding down. After his fetch session, he usually gets a drink of water, a quick cuddle, and then he's much more ready to settle into his bed. This simple game provides excellent physical exercise, stimulates their minds, and strengthens our bond. Plus, it usually results in a much calmer night for everyone. If you have a high-energy dog who struggles to settle down in the evenings, give hallway fetch a try. You might just find it's the perfect solution for those pre-bedtime zoomies!
