NO BATHS PLEASE
Milo has hated bath ever since he was a puppy. He always acts so silly when he gets out of the shower. He will literally roll in the rug until he’s dry. He also hates the blow dryer!
Just really exhausted him, but at least he’s clean!
It sounds like my Milo isn't alone when it comes to hating bath time! If your furry friend also echoes 'he doesn't like baths' with every splash, you know the struggle is real. I've learned a few things trying to make Milo's bath experience a little less dramatic, and maybe these tips can help you too! First, understanding why some dogs detest baths can be a game-changer. For Milo, I suspect it's a combination of the unfamiliar sensation of water, the loud blow dryer, and maybe even a past experience before he came to me. Many dogs find the sound of running water or the feel of being wet unsettling. The slippery tub can also be scary, making them feel insecure. Knowing this helps me approach bath time with more patience and empathy. Before we even get to the water, I try to make the area as inviting as possible. This means having everything ready beforehand: shampoo, towels, a non-slip mat for the tub, and, most importantly, a pile of high-value treats. I even sometimes bring a lick mat smeared with peanut butter to stick to the side of the tub; it's a great distraction! A quick brush before the bath also helps remove loose fur and prevents mats from tightening when wet. This prep work can significantly reduce stress, as there's less fumbling around once Milo is in the tub. When it comes to the actual bath, I've found that a gentle approach is key. Lukewarm water is a must – never too hot or too cold, as extreme temperatures can be very uncomfortable. Instead of just dumping water on him, I use a gentle stream from a showerhead or a cup, starting from his back and avoiding his face and ears to prevent water getting in. Positive reinforcement is HUGE! Every small step, from getting into the tub to enduring a quick rinse, gets a verbal 'good boy!' and a delicious treat. It's slow progress, but it's gradually turning bath time into less of a battle and more of a tolerable routine. After the bath, for dogs like mine who absolutely despise the blow dryer, wrapping them tightly in a super absorbent towel and letting them air dry in a warm, draft-free room is often the best option. I usually follow up with another towel for a good rub-down on the floor, and then, of course, there's always his classic post-bath rug-roll to get that extra dampness out! He burns off so much energy doing that. If full baths are truly a nightmare, remember there are fantastic alternatives. Waterless shampoos or grooming wipes can be fantastic for quick clean-ups between full baths, especially for muddy paws, dirty bellies, or just freshening up. Regular brushing also helps keep their coat clean, free of mats, and reduces the need for frequent washes, which can be a lifesaver when 'he doesn't like baths' is an understatement. It's all about finding what works best for your individual dog and making the experience as stress-free as possible for both of you. With a little understanding, a lot of patience, and some creative solutions, we can make bath time a bit more bearable for our beloved pets!
