The taste and smell of garlic… yum 😋

What’s the weirdest period craving you’ve ever had? Mine just happens to be garlic. I don’t care if it’s garlic by itself, garlic with shrimp, or garlic with rice… I just love garlic, and when I’m on my cycle it feels like I can’t get enough of it. I want garlic on my period due to hormonal changes with my estrogen and progesterone, causing me to crave and get hungry more.

People think it’s so funny that garlic is my go to craving when I’m on my cycle. I’ll tell them about it and they laugh, but to me, it feels completely normal at this point because it happens every time.

The hardest part is getting the smell off of me. I’ll shower, brush my teeth, and still feel like the garlic scent lingers. But no matter how much it sticks, I cannot help my cravings it’s just too good to give up. #girltalk #girlpov #lemon8challenge #AskLemon8 #cravings

... Read moreIt's wild, isn't it? That intense pull towards certain foods when your period is around the corner. For me, it's always been garlic, and I've often wondered, 'What's the meaning behind this craving?' Beyond just hormonal shifts in estrogen and progesterone that make us hungrier, there could be other reasons our bodies seem to scream for specific tastes. Some theories suggest that intense food cravings during menstruation, or in the days leading up to it, might be linked to fluctuating serotonin levels, which can influence mood and appetite. Eating certain foods, especially those rich in carbohydrates or comforting flavors, can temporarily boost serotonin. Garlic, while not a carb, is often paired with carb-heavy and savory dishes, making it a powerful comfort food. I've also heard discussions about potential nutrient deficiencies. While garlic itself isn't a primary source for common period-related deficiencies like iron or magnesium, it's often a key ingredient in hearty, nutrient-rich meals. Maybe my body subconsciously knows it needs something robust, and garlic is just the flavor profile that hits the spot. Thinking back to that day at work when someone dropped a container of minced garlic – the smell alone was enough to trigger me! It shows how powerful sensory cues can be when you're already predisposed to a craving. When that craving hits, I don't just want garlic; I want it *everywhere*. My go-to is usually making garlic butter, then using it to sauté shrimp and tossing it with hot garlic rice. It’s incredibly satisfying. If you're like me and find yourself yearning for that pungent, savory goodness, here's a little tip I've picked up for maximizing flavor: when you're preparing your garlic, especially if you're crushing or mincing it, let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before you start cooking. This resting period allows allicin, garlic's beneficial compound responsible for much of its flavor and aroma, to fully develop. It truly makes a difference in the depth of flavor in dishes like my garlic butter shrimp and rice. And about that lingering smell? I feel you! It's the hardest part. I've tried everything. Beyond showering and brushing, I've found that chewing fresh parsley or mint can help neutralize the breath, and rubbing lemon juice on my hands after chopping seems to cut through the scent. It's a small price to pay for satisfying such a powerful craving, though. What weird cravings do you get before your period, and how do you indulge them?

I had the most insane craving for pineapple last summer. Here I was, wanting to consume an entire pineapple while being allergic to pineapple. I took a 5-minute walk down to the Boba tea place I lived by. "Do you use actual fruit to flavor the fruit teas?" "No, it's all artificial." "Thank god, I need the largest size of pineapple black tea with lychee jelly, no ice." And everywhere that had something pineapple-flavored after that. "Do you use actual pineapple to flavor the pineapple-flavored thing?" I was buying anything pineapple that didn't actually have pineapple.
