face masks and bubble baths are nice but…
For me, self care goes way beyond face masks and bubble baths. Don’t get me wrong those things are nice, but they’re just surface level. Real self care is about doing the things that protect my mental, emotional, and physical health. Sometimes that looks like going to bed early instead of staying up scrolling, or saying no to plans when I know I’m exhausted. It can also mean making that doctor’s appointment I’ve been putting off, holding myself accountable to eat better, or sitting with uncomfortable feelings instead of avoiding them.
I’ve realized that true self care is about discipline just as much as it is about comfort. It’s choosing habits that support the life I want to live, even when it’s hard in the moment. It’s setting boundaries, creating routines, and doing the inner work to heal from past. Taking care of myself means showing up for the version of me I want to become, not just indulging in temporary relief. When I look at self care this way, it becomes a lifestyle, not just an occasional treat.
What self care really is goes far beyond occasional pampering—it’s about cultivating habits that nurture your overall wellness every day. While many people associate self care with relaxing activities like face masks and bubble baths, the true essence involves protecting and improving your mental, emotional, and physical health through consistent effort. For example, prioritizing adequate sleep by going to bed early rather than scrolling endlessly on your phone can significantly reduce stress and improve cognitive function. Learning to say no to social engagements when you're feeling exhausted helps conserve energy and prevents burnout. Making routine medical appointments that have been delayed is another crucial form of self care—addressing physical health proactively can prevent future complications. Embracing self care also means acknowledging and sitting with uncomfortable emotions instead of suppressing or avoiding them. This inner work is essential for emotional healing and resilience. Setting healthy boundaries at work or in relationships, and establishing daily routines that promote balance, contribute to a more sustainable and rewarding lifestyle. Discipline plays a vital role in true self care. It's about making conscious choices aligned with the life you want long-term, even when these choices require effort or sacrifice in the moment. Whether it’s improving your diet, seeking therapy, or dedicating time to mindfulness practices, these actions help you show up as the best version of yourself. Ultimately, true self care transforms from being an occasional treat into a holistic lifestyle approach. By shifting focus from temporary comfort to consistent, intentional habits, you nurture your wellbeing and equip yourself to handle life’s challenges with greater strength and grace.

I love this. My self care routine is usually face masks and tea but it’s so important to work on yourself on the inside too.
